University of Leeds vs University of Bath

I am currently in my gap year and considering to apply to the university of bath and leeds to study Chemical Engineering. I have A*AA and I applied last year and got offers from both universities but considered taking a gap year. I didn't realise that I could ask for the universities to consider keeping my place for the year after so I'll have to reapply through UCAS again. I was just wondering...1) Would I be offered a place?2) Are the league tables reliable?Since Bath is 4th and Leeds is 6th) Which university is better in terms of tudent lifeStudent SupportFinances - Is it more expensive?Thanks

Hi Dango,

Bath is probably the more prestigious university.

However if it was me I'd personally choose Leeds.

Bath is a very concentrated university in a rural part of the country, Leeds however is the complete opposite; I'd prefer to be in a busy environment around different people.

Leeds unsurprisingly has the better nightlife. It's in a big northern city.

Both universities have good student reviews. However there's more pomposity involved with going Bath.

Yeah Leeds seems more friendly, but in terms of bath being more prestigious, would it be better to go to Bath for that reason?

What course are you doing/ hoping to do?

Chemical Engineering

I want to go into bioengineering when I graduate, doing research for grouwing artificial tissues organs etc. Or maybe research into drug delivery, especially in cancer treatments

At Bath, one of their modules are in biology and bioprocessing whereas at Leeds they have optional topics in nanotechnology.
However Bath offers an optional topic in the final year to do Biomedical Engineering.

Course structure/content is something you should look at as well and weigh up - you don't want to be studying where most of the stuff is boring (you can't have everything in life ) or the topics just don't interest you.

That link is a rough guide to how much a year costs - I imagine that Leeds will have one on their website as well.

And if you're wondering about whether they'd give you an offer the second time around, you could email [email protected] to ask them, explaining your situation as well.

Rankings vary from league table to league table so maybe look at prospects instead.

If you know you want to work in bioengineering once you graduate why not study it? Chemical engineering tends to be involved with large-scale pipes and processing equipment.

Chemical Engineering at Bath is very prestigious.

However, if I was your I'd do a three year BSc or BEng at Leeds and then pursue a more specialised masters at a different university. This will give you the advantages of doing Chemical Engineering but the flexibility to then pursue bioengineering.

If you don't want to do that, however, Bath is probably better in terms of prestige. However Leeds tailors towards your interests more.

Honestly, they're both really good and you will be in a good position regardless of where you go

I didnt know you could do that? Would that be possible for me to do even though the modules are not that similar?

Also if you dont mind me asking, what university do you go to and what do you study?
