C1 graph transformations

Hi I just wanted to clarify if I needed to work out the value of k in question 2b or just draw the graph shifting up by a value of k? Thanks for any help in advance :smile:

You would just need to make the correct change to the graph, showing where it crosses the axis
It's saying, in any situation where you add a number at the end of the equation, what happens?

There is no way you could work out a value for k in this question. It doesn't give you any more information so you just have to think about where the graph would cross the y-axis, since it does not cross the x-axis as k is a positive constant. You can just think about this graphically or you could work out the value for the discriminant in terms of k - which will show you that the discriminant is always less than 0 (as k is positive). So in this question all you are doing is finding the y intercept in terms of k - when x=0
