Hello everyone!

My name is Swara. I'm a final year law student in India and I'm hoping to switch to a career in performing arts. I'm 22 years old now and I don't think I will be able to apply for courses that start before 2017. I loved acting in school but haven't done much of it in my five years at law school. Further, our training in English literature in school doesn't even come close to the kind of training students receive in the UK (understandably). I'm also a trained dancer. I'm trained in Baharatanatyam, which is an Indian classical dance form. I would really like to do work that blends both theatre and Bharatanatyam as I find the interplay extremely interesting.
I would really like to come and study acting in the UK as quite simply, I believe that's where the best training is. But I would really appreciate help from anyone here about what I need to work on to get in. I've been to a lot of the websites and I understand I need to prepare pieces for an audition and the specific requirements vary with each school. I've never been for an audition like this before, so I have no idea where to even start.
I'm also unsure of what kind of course I should apply to. As much as a BA in acting sounds extremely exciting, I'm already 22 with one five year degree under my belt and honestly, I'm worried that it's already too late for another bachelor's degree.
If anyone here has any help to offer me, I'd be very very grateful.

Thank you so much!

In your situation I would look mainly at the specialist acting schools rather than universities. For example, LAMDA's two-year degree in professional acting which is mainly populated by graduates of other subjects: http://www.lamda.org.uk/drama-school/all-courses/acting-courses/foundation-degree-in-professional-acting

Hi,

I'm in my almost 32 have always had a passion for acting and was pretty good at it from 5-15, then I left school got into banking, had a family and my dreams drifted away. This year I've really been studying acting in my own time again. I've been looking at schools in London. Guildhall stands out for me, theres something drawing me in, not sure what yet. Excited about the open day in Dec though. Do you think I'm too old to do this? I'm not even sure how to go about applying for a course once I find the right one.

any help and opinions would be well received..

Absolutely not too old. There are roles for everyone in acting! From what I understand some schools you apply directly to the school, others are through ucas, just follow the application procedure and you will be fine.

Wishing you all the best!

If you want to become a professional actor then LAMDA should be your first choice.

The best Drama schools in the UK are vocational and not academic. So if I were you I would consider only those in the top 10.

Not to old at all. Guildhall is a direct entry and not through UCAS, they take 24 people a year and are looking for something very specific. They do not want you to act, they want you to learn a monologue and play it as yourself. If you are what they are looking for then you will get in. It's a tricky audition because younger students don't always know who they are, or have the confidence to be who they are. But at 32 you will have more self knowledge and inner strength and it will work in your favour.

I think you quoted the wrong person?

Guys, should I wear my glasses during the audition? I usually wear them daily, but I can see enough without them to not make a fool of myself. Thoughts?

Glasses don't Make you look like a fool?! Why not wear them but during the monologue take them off in a fashion that Gary Oldman does when playing various roles.. Rub your eyes.. Let them see you with them both on and off during the monologue.

not audition related directly but does anyone have any techniques that help them learn lines...just been cast in a play and im on every page! x

I have a question. :-) Does the panel clock your monologues at BOVTS, RADA, Guildford or RCS?
Has/is anyone auditioned for the RCSSD MA Acting for Screen course (or similar)?

I'm in my final year of an 'unrelated' degree and haven't really been to a proper audition before.

How do you choose your monologue?
Might seem like a silly question, but where do you 'look' when you perform?
What sort of questions do they ask?
What's a 'voice movement' workshop? Is that singing?
What do you wear?
etc.

Has anyone applied to LAMDA yet? If so, can you tell me how far in the future they're booking audition dates for people applying now? Thanks!
Im Thinking of applying for Drama School at LAMDA, RADA, Mountview and Guildhall.
However im soon to be 27 years old and feel maybe im to old to do this? Ive always had a passion for acting but did not build up enough confidence when I was younger.
any thoughts on this topic? Are there any other 'mature' students applying?

Don't be put off by being a 'mature' student. Drama Schools like people with a little more life experience  I am soon to be 28 and am applying to do Stage Management! If you never try for it you never know, and then you will always look back on your life and wonder what might have been if you'd just taken that chance!

I'm 27 right now, and I'm applying. Don't feel like you're the only one...

Im in the same position as you. im 27 and gave up drama when I was 15 always enjoyed it though. I work in finance in the city and its a big decision but id rather take the leap than a life of regrets!

Don't let age get in the way of your dreams. :-)

I applied yesterday and got my audition date today for the 29th November. I think the latest date they offered was December I think.
Hi huys,

First of all i wish you all a great preparation for your auditions, keep it cool, it's just an audition, not the end of your life:wink:

I would like to know if anyone of you can talk about the quality of these schools ( from your own experience or friends, or friends of friends...etc). :

- Mountview
- Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama,
- Royal Conservatoire of Scotland,
- Bristol old Vic,
- Oxford drama School,
- Italia Conti

Also i do not know if you have heard of that but the Guardian has released a University Guide 2015 for best drama program and it seems that Birmingham University is far better than many "famous" drama schools. If anyone have an opinion about it or if you have heard anything from friends, current students...etc it would be great because it's confusing ( i am not from the UK that's why i ask), here is the link :
