Body plans and homeotic genes

When the spec says 'Homeotic genes are similar in plants, animals and fungi', does it mean homeotic genes are similar within animals, plants and fungi as separate groups but different in animals and plants/ plants and fungi etc, or does it literally mean they are similar across all animals, plants and fungi i.e. animals have similar homeotic genes to fungi etc?

Hope it makes sense, sorry for the stupid question :P

It means they have similar homeotic genes, which express themselves to form body plans. The only difference is that some will be expressed more than others, due to transcription factors (you might have covered this if you studied operons) thus different body plans are produced for animals, plants and fungi :smile:

So the homeotic genes are similar for all animals, plants and fungi, so for example fungi homeotic genes are the same as animal homeotic genes?

Also, with operons, is it the repressor protein that is the transcription factor?
