Why are people resentful to the rich?

Why are people resentful to the rich?

isn't that harmful to our economy/way of life?

USA shows a lot more appreciation for those who are well off. But they don't have the same level of nanny welfare state as we do!

can't find a link to it now, but a few years ago during the 'banker bashing' era the brothers who owned the B&M bargains chain of shops sold up for something like £500m each. The local BBC sent out a reporter to Blackpool to do some vox pops of B&M customers and tbh the reporter was trying to stir it up a bit asking them how they felt about the founders... but if anyone was resentful about the brothers getting rich it didn't make it into the broadcast.

Typical comments from the public on the themes of 'they worked hard' 'they started with nothing' 'they succeeded in a very competitive market'

what does seem to get on peoples nerves though is other people getting rich in markets that look non-competitive or rigged in some way... or people getting ahead because their parents gifted them capital or pulled strings.

People hate the rich because they are jealous and they do not ever believe that they reach a point in their lives where they wont have to worry about money. Ironically the latter part is not caused by lack of income but the fact that these people do not know how to live within their means and are often fooled into becoming hyper consumers.

Did you see the news item on the black guy with his baby in a buggy caught keying an expensive car by a dash cam?
If he earns (assuming he had a job ) under 30k he is in net benefit. He gets more out of the system than he pays in, in tax.
The guy that made a success of his life and drives that car supports him and his kid, but that's not enough is it. That green monster still had to come out and have it's pound of flesh.

its just jealousy that they will never be able to get that rich because they are wasting their time on a forum hating on more successful people
I wouldn't say I conciously resent the rich however it does annoy me when people get ahead of the game because of their parents. At my university so many people are gettinggood internships and jobs just because of their parents. That is just wrong.

I would also say the rich people at my university don't seem to have any concept of being gracious or humble - they take everything for granted and think the world revolves around them. Many of them need life lessons.

he wishes he earned anywhere near 30k! living off the rest of us.
To delude themselves that they aren't responsible for their own problems. They need to believe that the rich are the reason they themselves are failures because the realisation that they're stupid or lazy would drive them to actually do something about it (and we can't have that now). It's "that person is far more successful than me; the reason must be that they stole it or cheated in some way."

Just bitter, salty people with chips on their shoulders.
People tend to resent others that have more than they do. It's natural. It seems unfair and unjust to those without, despite the fact many - if not most - of the rich earned their money or inherited eat via legitimate means.

That's the driving force behind much of the recent rise in socialist beliefs: "They're more successful than we are, they've got more than we do, and we don't like that, so they should be made to surrender their wealth to us." It's naive and illiberal - why should they?

And before I'm accused of anything, I'd like to point out that I'm currently living below the poverty line.

For the same reasons they pay tax.
Jealousy (someone might be a hard work but never get anywhere on the career ladder then seeing someone born into money is like rubbing salt in their wounds) abuse of poorer citizens, lack of charity, dislike of greediness or rather than the rich in general they dislike the system in place it may not be anything personal.

true i have met people who raise this up quite a bit "some people are just born into it, it's not fair" then literally spend all day on social media sites lol.

Who the hell dislikes the rich? virtually everyone wants to be rich. Or at least they wouldn't mind if they were rich.

Flat tax rates hit the poor disproportionately hard.
