From my report last year they have "pass marks" for both sections. Last year my physics was above the pass mark by a reasonable amount (can't specifically remember), but my maths was short by 3 marks. I had straight A*s at GCSEs and straight As at AS and still didn't get interviewed, so don't get your hopes up too much :frown:

Do you have any idea of the approximate pass marks for each section? (In any year.)

I dug through my e-mails and found this:

To get on the shortlist (on average) you needed
33 Maths
23 Physics
You got:
30 Maths
30 Physics.

If that's of any use, sorry I don't have anything on any other years!

I also want to note that I personally am not very good at Physics, and I probably would've made the cut had I worked harder. I didn't know any of the C4 maths that came up (the first few marks of the maths were C4 topics), so if I can do it I know you guys can!

Haha personally I would like there to be more mechanics questions because I tend to do better in those, not to rub salt in your wounds though!


To be honest, I actually like mechanics questions. I mean who wouldn't like a beautiful pulley or a lever question :wink:

I never know this is a thing. I can only assume that the competition was very tight last year.

Would you have been invited if you got say 40 on the maths but only 25 on the physics?

No clue, I suppose it's down to college? I did open application, and also applied for engineering so maths is more important!
Can someone post a link of all the formulae we're expected to know?

to find k i presume you're told info in the question e.g. isotope x has a half life of 12 years, find k? cheers again btw
Looks like Oxford is too difficult then, I barely get any marks on the Physics section. If there is a specific Physics cut off, then I am gone.:frown:

I haven't used a calculator properly for 3 months so I feel life's simpler without one :biggrin:

P.S. But I still somewhat miss graphing equations in a few clicks bc it's a different skill.
