Rape culture in India?

sorry what is bollywood?

All that looks so seamless. But why do men in India have a tendency to commit rape?
have you watched this BBC documentary? I found it very interesting.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0345d6w
Like what I said - they come from a culture which treats people unequally, and thus some men might not view women as proper humans and just as objects to fulfil their carnal desires.

I've heard about the program but haven't watched it, though I know the ending - just wished that the programme writers wrote the scenario in such a way that the accused turned out to not be a rapist, just to challenge people's perceptions even further.

Nucdev is a funny guy who doesn't like being serious. He said on the forum that he was an Indian so I figured I ask him why there are so many rape cases in India. He's given his opinion and I respect what he's had to say.

Oh I can be serious when needed (like on this issue of rape or here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3703797&page=2&p=60407415#post60407415).

It's just that the times you saw me posting non-serious trash was because the situation called for it. I was responding to someone who has a "funny" profile and had made posts which were not serious.

Also, as @WokSz has said, generalization of the whole of India does not serve any useful purpose. India does not have a monolithic culture. The culture in a village in Gujarat, for example, is VERY different to the culture in villages of neighbouring states like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Some posters have rightly said that the media is the reason why more (but by no means all) of these cases are (thankfully) reported, especially since the 2012 Delhi gangrape.

So the media has done a good job by highlighting this issue more and more, however, it has also led to people making a blanket assumption that Indian males and men of Indian origin are all maniacal rapists which really doesn't help the situation.
As the pictures posted by @Yawn! show, huge numbers of Indian men have also been protesting and confronting the issue of rape in their nation.

This is the definition of Bollywood;

A name for the Indian popular film industry, based in Mumbai (Bombay)

It is messed up.

bollywood film industry in india.

Spoiler

I have some suggestion to get this rate down, but there is no one to listen. Any way there are some more reasons.

Can you please share what suggestions you have to decrease rape rates in India?

Original post by WokSz
This is similar to me saying 'why do English women have a tendency to drink more than, say, Arab women?' Such generalisations are futile and aren't constructive to the underlying problem of rape.

Rather than trusting the mass media about the gender issues in India, I recommend reading research by specialists on India, e.g. Dr. Clarinda Still at Oxford.

Original post by Josb
It's reported rapes, not the actual number of rapes, which is probably in the millions.

What makes you say that the number of rapes in India is probably in the millions?

Original post by demx9
Still, lower than Sweden

Hi demx9. What is the situation in Sweden? can you brief us?

Normally I would give an in depth, well thought out response to the question. However it's clear that the OP is more interested in spreading bile and trying to defame an entire nation of 1.2 billion human beings, rather than initiate serious discourse.

Spoiler

I respect all religions and all races. Look through my previous posts and you can see that it is true. I want to have an honest and mature discussion about the high number of rapes in India.

I am so sorry if i have offended you. Are you an Indian? Is that why you became defensive? The reason I focused on India in this thread is because I've come across many online news reports of rape in India. If you are uncomfortable about this then you can always choose to ignore this thread.

It's really okay tbh. I know how it feels when people slam against your own kind. I'm American and even though people here continue to slam us, deep down I know they are right because I know that my country has made many mistakes and instead of defending my country and being defensive on this forum I have come to terms with my country's faults. I also make it a point to let everyone here know that not all Americans are like Bush and Cheney.

Anyways I want to return to the facts. These are just some of the reported rapes that took place in 2015 alone.
1) A 74 year old nun was raped in India by six men?
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-32062692

2) A bus driver and another man took turns to rape a woman on a moving bus?
http://www.thehindu.com/news/nationa...cle7662647.ece

3) American tourist raped by 2 men?
http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...erican-tourist

4) Japanese tourist raped by a tour guide?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...our-guide.html

5) A 2-year old baby was raped by two teenagers?
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/1...061014792.html

6) A 2-year old and 5-year old were gang-raped in separate attacks in different parts of the city?
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/1...092246616.html

There's just too many cases. This is shocking. I can't go on.

The focus of this thread is on the number of rapes in India and why this still continues to happen in India. perhaps later on we can expand the discussion to cover other areas and countries? but for now please stick to India and the high number of reported rapes committed in the past few years in India which is about 30,000 per annum.

Earlier @nucdev suggested I ask why the rapes in India are so high on the Indian Society thread. It was a good idea but I want to hear from everyone regardless of their nationalities and not just from the Indians. So I've tagged some members from the Indian community thread. Hopefully we can get this discussion going without the need for anyone to be ultra defensive or worse, direct unwarranted criticisms at one another.

Hi demx9. Im an American and through my time on this forum it seems to me that people here only believe the news if it is written by the BBC. so I'm afraid the Metro doesn't cut it.

The Swedish police recorded the highest number of offences - about 63 per 100,000 inhabitants - of any force in Europe, in 2010. The second-highest in the world.

What the.......?

Previously in the thread you've posted links from The Hindu twice, Al Jazeera twice, The Guardian and The Telegraph once each and The BBC only once.

By this recent logic, it would seem that all but 1 of those links you've posted shouldn't be believed by people on here which is ridiculous.

I've given you rep for having taking the trouble to provide a piece from the BBC. Who are committing these rapes in Sweden? the locals or foreigners?

I know its difficult trying to please everyone but give me some credit. I'm trying here. Most of the people here only trust the BBC. It slipped from my mind. I was reminded by some of the members that BBC is the only way to go. Please forgive me. I can be forgetful at times. It'll only be BBC from now on. I promise.

Oh dear. OMG! I don't believe this. This is exactly what the police said to the many of the 1400 victims of the Rotherham scandal when they went to the police station to lodge a report against their Pakistani abusers. OMG! This is so chilling.
Original post by nucdev
You were probably better off asking this on the TSR Indian Society page rather than create a new thread for it and you would probably get more replies from Indians in India. It has been covered on there to some extent: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3036493&page=60

As one poster (@Yawn!) on there said:

"I think a lot of these incidents in India are down to poor socio-economic conditions, poverty, lack of education, frustration over lack of opportunities, and bad influences of media (bollywood in particular), and thus a failure to challenge a heavily skewed patriarchal system."

Firstly nothing excuses rape, it's disgusting and it must change. But he is certainly right about the patriarchal system.

But I have no idea why she is asking you to explain this, she really has some issues against indians I have noticed, after discriminating against me on a revision thread and telling me not to use the thread like the NHS.

You are so ignorant it's unbelievable!

I never said anything excuses rape, I was just quoting someone else to point out that the topic has been covered.

Plus in a later comment when I was asked whether 30,000 rapes in a country with 1.2 billion people would not be a big deal, I said even 1 rape amongst a world population of 7 billion is a big deal.

Was the last comment on ignorance aimed at me or OP?

Hi Nucdev. Your origins are from India? Are you a first generation British citizen? Could you please help us understand why the number of rape incidents in India are so high?

They've been several reports of rapes in India and yet there seems to be no end to this horrific crime. According to The Hindu, Delhi is now the official rape capital of India. Why is this happening in India?
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Delhi/delhi-is-now-indias-rape-capital-show-ncrb-data/article7554551.ec

Your beyond stupid, your obviously a stupid troll. The stats you give show that their is not such a high amount of rape and certainly not a high rate of rape, unlike in u.k and the u.s. You probably don't even know what rate of rape means.

But let me give you UK gov stat that you will like.

http://rapecrisis.org.uk/statistics.php

Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year
that's roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone)

every hourNearly half a million adults are sexually assaulted in England and Wales each year

1 in 5 women aged 16 - 59 has experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16

Only around 15% of those who experience sexual violence choose to report to the police

Approximately 90% of those who are raped know the perpetrator prior to the offence

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics

In the U.S there is 84,000 rapes every year and this is just the reported rapes, it doesn't include unreported rapes which they admit most are not reported. In 2013 there was 173,000 rapes and sexual assaults just officially.

Also recently it was exposed that 25% of university female students are raped in u.s. That's what you call a real rape culture.

Official U.S rate of rape is 27 per 100,000, UK is 28 per 100,000 and India is just 2 per 100,000

Rape culture in UK and U.S is so common that it doesn't even make news. It's become normal for them.

Why such a high rates and percentages of rapes and sexual assaults in U.K and U.S?

hi slade. thank you for your nice post. it has so many stats. wonderful. although I must add that this thread is focused on India and why the number of rapes there are so high which is like 30,000 for each of the last few years. Once we're done with India and depending on the appetite of other forum members a decision will then be taken whether to create a new thread on rapes committed in UK or US. But for now as i've told other members on this thread could you please stick to just India and the high number of rapes committed there? thanks.
