Don't mean to be a pest but can i just ask what your stats are and how you found the competition for grad entry, and where you're studying.
Also how did you find biomedicine?
(Sorry again for all the questions)

I'm just worried that if i do biomedicine and dont get a 2:1 ill be left in the lurch with nothing whereas pharmacy will at least leave me with a profession.

2:1 biomed
A-levels AAB although not relevant for many unis
GCSE's: can't remember and not relevant

680 ukcat

Competition is fierce. Everyone is a strong applicant generally.

Biomed was fun but challenging at times

Biomed gives you a profession providing you choose an accredited course.

Questions are pretty standard. The blue mmi book off amazon will give you all the prep you need. I applied to just kcl (grad entry) and then undergrad at kcl and undergrad at kcl.

Im thinking of studying medical biology and was wondering if that's a decent course to apply with?
Also, how much extra-curricular and work experience did you have?
sorry for all the questions, its just that kcl was my dream and after my results i realised graduate entry is the only way... thanks in return

From our "welcome talks" the prof said technically he's only allowed to accept biomed and that for people with other degrees that he wants to accept he has to kinda make case for them. Medical biology *should* be fine but it's up to you whether you take the risk as the entry requirements will only get tighter in subsequent years for various reasons. Personally I would choose biomed. It's the safest option and you have a career path available should grad dentistry not
Work out.

Work experience: 3 years volunteering in a care home

Dental work experience: 8ish months in GDP, 4 weeks in maxfacs, some time in various clinics eg ADC,Oral medicine, Ortho, Oral surgery etc

Extracurriculars: dance/drama and a few other basic things

I don't think so.

Graduated 2.1 in Biomed
A-levels: BBBc (bio, chem maths, physics)
GCSE: 5 As, 6 Bs

Preparing for UKCAT

First time applying for dentistry

Hi, im applying for graduate entry to dentistry this year and my grades aren't too different from yours. Im just wondering if you were made any offers and if so where did you apply?

hi there, I'm looking to apply for grad dentistry this year, could you help plz?
Hi guys congrats to those who got offers you deserved it.

I've got a bit of a problem I'm in yr 13 atm and planning to send my application off soon to study biomed. At AS I achieved BCDD (chem, bio, psychology, business) :frown: and my predicted grades are BBB hopefully get ABB.

My question is I really wanted to do dentistry and obviously I can't, so what are my options? I have some understanding of graduate entry and undergrad but which universities do you think I should apply to for dentistry in my situation? and do you think I should apply to do biomed at unis that do dentistry (grad entry)?

Sorry for asking sooo many questions but I'm proper stressing out. Thanks
Yes unfortunately you would need three A's minimum at A - Level if you wish to enter at undergraduate level. There are only four universities that do a four year graduate dentistry course. KCL and Aberdeen offer this, you need the Ukcat. Aberdean have an average of around 620 for admissions but KCL have been known to have a lot of candidates with high UKcat scores. However they have assured me they have never put in place a cut off tariff. They do not look at your A - Levels. Liverpool and UClan also do a 4 year course. However this is where studying Bio Med comes In handy. Both universities require you to fill out a prior knowledge form and Uclan require you to take a test (In November) I have attached the link with the form on it http://www.uclan.ac.uk/courses/bds_dentistry_graduate_entry.php. Liverpool requires ABB at A - Levels Including Chemistry and Biology ( so that's something to think about ) and UClan require CCC at A - Level.

I would suggest doing BioMed and specialising in modules in anatomy and microbiology. This will make you much more attractive to universities. And especially for UClan it will make the test much easier.

Remember 5 year courses are not funded as a second degree so unless you have a lot of cash you will need to apply for the four year courses. Hope this helps. I am happy to answer any questions you have

Did you manage to do it in time? I have not seen much activity this year for graduate entry.

Hi there,

I'm a graduate entry dentistry student at KCL. I got on through the 4 year course which allows you to skip 1st year and join straight into 2nd year. This is only possible if your undergrad degree is relevant enough. At A level I got BBDb, I got a high 2.1 in Chemistry with Biochemistry BSc and also did a 1 year MSc for which i got a distinction which I hadn't finished until I'd already started Dentistry so the grade wasn't taken into account. I got 667 UKCAT. I also had an offer form QMUL.

Some people say you have to have at least a 700 UKCAT to get into KCL but I know so many people who have got in either the undergrad or grad way with scores form 620 up. Also KCL are very interested in you being well rounded and NOT BORING. They are so bored of people with perfect grades. They get them all the time, but dentistry is not just book-smarts, so really try to convey the variety of of your experience and why they're helpful for dentistry.

7 of the 30 people who got on to the graduate course were already biomed students from KCL if that helps.

If you want to get into UCLan, you have to have done something in the life sciences- they didn't consider my degree relevant enough- so biomed, physiology, biochem degrees are the best.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for this info, you hear a lot of the time that KCL have a cut off of like 700+ for grad entry but I emailed the head of admissions and he said it is simply not true.

My degree Biological and Medicinal Chemistry was not accepted at UClan too.

Thanks for your reply it has got me thinking about changing some of my unis. I had previously put down St George's, Queen Mary, Brighton, Warwick and Leicester as my 5 options to do biomed at. I don't think I could study at king's the entry requirements are too high for me however UCLan and Liverpool seem ideal for me.

I don't know if you're familiar with the biological science and medical science courses they offer in Leicester? but which one would you think would be the most beneficial to an aspiring dental student (They all seem interesting)?

biological science courses- https://le.ac.uk/courses/biological-sciences-microbiology-bsc

or

Medical science courses- https://le.ac.uk/courses/medical-microbiology-bsc

just to let you know there are other courses within these 2.
If you wana make it easier for yourself do a Biomed at one of the universities that offers the entry level dentistry courses. Like KCLgP
pep said 7 out of 30 students on the KCL course came from KCL undergraduate. Also that Biology course looks good (containing physiology ect ) but what you have to take into account is most people do get in with BioMed.

We have a Medical science course at Exeter too and I do Biological and Medicinal chemistry. I would of found it a lot easier to get into dentistry if I did there course rather than mine.

Just something to think about. If you like the courses at Liverpool and UClan aim for them, you will probably have some interaction with med school lectureures so you can ask them directly how to apply ect

Thanks again,

Is the biological science course at Leicester not the same as BioMed? If it's not IBMS approved course then should I even bother applying to it?
Not too sure, Leicester do have other medically related courses as well so I am sure you could probably pick and choose very relevant modules.

Have a look at Exeter Medical Sciences to see what sort of prior knowledge you need http://www.exeter.ac.uk/undergraduate/degrees/medicalsci/medicalsci/#Programme-structure

If your degree title isn't BioMed but you have covered all the necessary bits then you will be fie I am sure .

Good luck with your application. I am applying this year for my BDS but there doesn't seem to be much entry level interest on the student room compared with last year. Very strange. I will let you know how my application goes.

Do you know whether the questions for the UCLAN entrance exam are all MCQ? And any clue how long the exam is? How many questions etc? Aaargh I feel so lost..

No I do not. However I do not think you should worry about that till a bit later. First you have to get on your degree, do your degree, get a 2:1 or 1st, and get accepted into UClan. I am sure by that time if you choose the right modules your knowlage will be fine.

It was tested on the knowlage required in that prior requisite form I sent you. So like DNA, anatomy self/non self body recognition. Just general stuff.

Hey JohnDeMetz, I am that far already :frown: I am currently in my final year at uni, predicted a 2.1 in biomedical sciences. I received an email yesterday from uclan, regarding the entrance exam invitation (yayie!!).. It's on the 20th november, but I feel really confused and nervous :frown:

So the exam is mainly DNA and anatomy focused you say? How did you find the exam, was it difficult?

Oh BTW.. "It was tested on the knowlage required in that prior requisite form I sent you." I did not receive a form.. but do you mean the VPL form on the UCLan BDS website?

Oh sorry Nergis, I thought I was still talking to Fazziar 1 :s. I think I was pretty tired when I replied haha. I haven't taken the exam before but from what other people have told me It based on what the prior knowledge form on the UClan website say you need to know. So

Body cells and structure

Body systems and nutrition

Body locomotion and control

What degree did you do by the way? What are your stats if you don't mind me asking. Its nice to actually find someone applying to grad entry this year haha.

Where else have you applied? If you have applied to Aberdeen we should be hearing back earliest by the 12th of this month.
