Generally this.

Generally what?

Usually because the left keep promising free education and the like.

We all know they wouldn't hold up to that if they got into power.

Why would academia be bothered about that. Also that's not all the left.

Generally what?

The fact that it is dominant.
Its been like this for 300 years at least except in the rare historical situation. Mainly to do with intellectuals generally seeing the world in an universalistic manner which lends itself to left wing ideology. They like to think that they can come up with an explanation for every social phenomena which is why they like socialism for example.

Its certainly intensified over the past 60 years because we had the cultural Marxist march through the institutions which then resulted in a campus situation that was so hostile to and distasteful for any conservative which meant they would never dream of becoming a social scientist or humanities academic.

The fact that it is dominant.

This is circular reasoning.
Because the left is ideological, and academia is ideological.

I also rarely hear about left-wing STEM academics. It tends to be humanities, arts and social sciences academics.

It depends on academic subjects. There are more lefties in Creative Arts than in Geopolitics.

Most academics do in fact, teach.

Because if they didn't, there would in fact be no more academia. You clearly have no idea what you're on about if you think people take the time to get into research positions at universities because they want to teach undergrads.

People choose academia for many reasons. One of them being the inability to hack the career.

Because a higher proportion of intelligent people are lefties.

It takes very little intelligence or genuine creative genius to be a social science academic nowadays. Just copy what a Jewish guy wrote in the 50s-60s and blame the patriarchy, white "racism", capitalism, homophobia, etc. for every problem in society.

Badasses. I aim to be one myself.
Because right wingers are thickos

No real practical experience of the world.

How do you explain the same phenomenon in professional disciplines such as law, medicine, nursing, dentistry, education, business, social work etc where academics are more likely than not to have professional experience?

Thought they would be people who could no longer 'do'.

The Left does not have a monopoly on intelligence; lefties saying otherwise makes this self-evident.

I don't know about intelligence, but there's a correlation between having degrees and being left: http://www.businessinsider.com/proof-republicans-really-are-dumber-than-democrats-2012-5

because the left deal with more impractical yet possible ideas. They are more idealistic in nature, rather than the right which focus on pragmatic economic results. Generally this means that left minded individuals are more drawn to academia. imo

And also likely to be more liberal and thus more open-minded/receptive to ideas.
Because most of them have never had a proper job before and have spent their entire adult lives living in an echo chamber full of people who'll never get prominence if they don't agree with what everyone else says. So like a student union basically.

Well by definition they still "do", that's why they are clinical teachers and not giving powerpoints to first years. Many are also part time and are still very actively involved in their field.

Source? Most scientists believe in climate change.
