Chemistry : Alkanes and Alkenes

Show reactions of pentene, hexene and octene with bromine water
How would u do this???

well
pentene = C5H10 (l)
bromine water = Br2 (aq)

so just put them together

C5H10 + Br2 -> C5H10Br2

simplez

bromine water should go from orange to colourless if reacted with an alkene

if you draw the full structural formula, all that happens when you add the Br2 is that the double bond breaks and joins up to the 2 'Br's

i hope that made sense lol
Pentene, hexene and octene, all double bond alkenes. They have 'spare bonds' which open up and form bonds with the bromine water atoms causing it to discolourise.
This is all we needed to know :tongue:

no problem , you sprang up in my head when i saw this thread as you are the oracle of knowledge:h:
Simplistically, the alkene bond receives a Br atom at each end and the mechanism proceeds via a bromonium bridge intermediate.
