Best Cambridge College For Drinking/Social Atmosphere

I want a ronseal answer to a ronseal question from someone there now/there recently.

If you're talking postgrad study, then the Darwin College bar is pretty legendary.

I agree with this. Darwin is a sociable place (bar often busy at the weekends) and everyone there is a postgraduate student, which is a huge plus. Other very sociable colleges are: St Edmund's, Hughes Hall and Wolfson. You'll have a great time at any of them.

I haven't heard great things about Eddies, honestly. I have a few friends there who find it a bit flat in terms of atmosphere. However, as all of the above are postgrad/mature colleges, the 'feel' of them will vary a lot from year to year, since so many of their students are one-year Master's students, and how sociable or party-like the college is that year depends a lot on that particular cohort. I saw this in my own college as well - during my MPhil year, things were sociable but restrained. The next year, a big group of American Master's students essentially took over the running of the MCR, and there were a lot more raucous parties and drinking that year. The following year then, when that group had largely left, things returned to a more sedate style. So it really does depend on the people in any particular year. However, in any college, you will always find people who are up for going out and being sociable.

Eddie's has a fantastic sociable atmosphere. I had a great time there, lots of fun people and the bar was always lively. It's a top choice! If I could go back, I would choose Eddie's or Darwin.

I do think these things can be so dependent on who the other people are in your cohort. But someone's always up for fun, even in the postgrad colleges (despite what the undergrads might think! :wink:

)

I'm not at Cambridge but I have a very good friend who went to Queen's. He loved it there and said the socialising was fantastic!

Almost everyone at Cambridge thinks their college is the best and great and fantastic.
The reason it's not very good idea to ask anyone at Cambridge which college is the best as they're bound to say it's theirs. :biggrin:

Just a side note: it's Queens', not Queen's, btw. They were 'founded' by two queens, in two stages. :wink:

Not necessarily. Plenty of posts on the forums where people have openly criticised their own college.

Of course people do criticise a bit about their college sometimes. No place on earth is 100% perfect. But it doesn't mean they don't think their college is better than others :wink:

And yet you claimed that it isn't the best place to ask people about their college. By the same logic, it would be futile to read any marketing material (e.g. website) for a college as naturally they will want to sell you the best parts of it.

Did you read what I wrote? Point being, if you are going to give advice to someone please make sure you know your facts or else you risk of preventing someone else from getting genuine assistance.
