What is bournemouth university like?

I am applying for uni in december and Bournemouth is one of the ones I really like for psychology. Just wanted the opinion of the uni in general from people that do the course or go there?

hey! i don't go to the uni here so i can't help you there (sorry) but i've heard it's quite good for psychology! it's very modern and their facilities are up to date (i visited on a school trip since i live here). the student life is amazing and there are so many clubs around the university at only a bus trip away, and there are often deals on in clubs such as 'toast tuesdays' :smile:

I haven't been to the uni but I've been around the area and it's so nice. There's loads of shops and amazing nightclubs and you have the beach near you as well

Good to hear you're doing your research! There's some info on our website about the Psychology testing suite, but hopefully there'll be a current student on here that can give you their opinion. I hope that helps!

Hi meg_lou,

My name is Gemma and I am currently a second year student at Bournemouth University.

I study BA Television Production so don’t know too much about the psychology facilities; I am happy to answer any general questions you had about Bournemouth though!

As a student here I really love it, the town is great. They have all the high street brands for shopping, cinemas and bowling complex nearby and lots of restaurants and take away places to eat. They also have lower and upper gardens which are both areas of greenery; you can even play mini golf there and go up in a huge hot air balloon. Oh and not to forget the beach of course!

Night life is also really good here. There are tons of pubs and bars to drink in and a range of clubs (Such as Firestation run by BU, Halo, Cameo and Lost Gardens) which all offer student nights on different days of the week.

Travel links are also very good. So if you wanted to take a trip to Poole, Swanage or New forest you’re in easy reach!

Hi Meg

My name is Amy and I am a third year at BU.

I don't know where psychology is based, but I can give you an overview of the Talbot campus and the town.

Talbot Campus:
This campus is more like a traditional campus where everything is all together on one area. There are various places where you can get food (cafes and restaurant). There is a library and several computer labs, some for everyone and some for specific courses).

The campus itself is going through a remodeling phase (the newest building should be finished in time for the 2016 freshers- and looks really cool). The student center was new this year and is a really nice building to - well worth checking out).

Bournemouth:
There are several distinct areas to Bournemouth, including Winton, Wallisdown, and the town center (these are the ones I actually have experience with so I will chat about these).

Winton: this is where a lot of students live in their second and third year. It is almost like a mini town in itself, with a high street which has everything you need.

Wallisdown: is a high street. It has an Aldis and a Tescos, so you are fine for all your food based needs. But if you want to go clothes shopping or shop for books/stuff you will have to go into the Winton or the Town Center

Town Center: Has everything you could possibly need, clothes/books/food/stuff. Is the more expensive area but also has a lot of entertainment- and the beach!

In general- Personally I really like Bournemouth. I am from a semi-rural town back home and don't really like cities that much. But Bournemouth gives off the feel of a large town, with a fair number of green spaces to boot. There is a lot to do here and the people at uni are generally really nice (and actually the people in general are to).

If you are thinking of coming in 2016, there is one final open day on the 21st November.I would really advise coming to see Bournemouth for yourself, as you can get a much better feel for the place when you see it. If you aren't coming till 2017 though I would say wait till the summer open days so you can see just how awesome the town and uni are!

Hi bethymanch!

From what I’ve heard about the course, in terms of practicality and getting you ready for industry, it’s one of the best courses in the country. I can’t really offer a comparison to AUB, but I will say that the facilities that we have at Bournemouth for the course are excellent and are up to industry standard.

As with most courses at BU there is the chance to take the course 3 years full-time with 4 week placement or 4 years full-time 40 week placement. The emphasis here is on giving you the opportunity to make connections and give you the best possible start to your future career.

Aside from the course itself, within BU we have a student-led media channel called Nerve, so you have plenty of opportunities to get involved and use the skills that you’ve learned within lectures.

I'm not quite sure what I can out in my personal statement to improve as I know not a lot of people get accepted into Bournemouth!

It's my top chose though and I've heard it's great for nightlife :smile:

For personal statements, the main piece of advice that I’d have to give about making yourself stand out is showing that you’ve put the passion that you have for your subject into practice. Have you had and work experience or worked on a project that has required you to use skills that you would use in television production? And also, I think it’s good to show that you know exactly what you are applying for! In my case my course combines practical and academic skills, so I wrote about reading around my subject that I had done, as well as what practical aspects of the course I was interested in. So as an example, writing about being interested in how new technology, can help drive to to create exciting and original visuals etc.

I can tell you that Bournemouth is indeed great for nightlife! We have many clubs and bars and the Old Firestation, a club run by the Student Union, is only an 8-minute walk at most from student halls in the area. There’s lots of choice out here, and even as someone who doesn’t go out that often, there are some night outs that I really enjoyed! There’s something for everyone here, which is what makes Bournemouth such a cool place to be.

Hi meg_lou,

My name is Steve and I’m a final year student studying Business Studies with Strategic HRM at Bournemouth University.

My fellow students have covered off a lot of the great things about studying at BU, and I’m sure you’ve seen for yourself at the open day, but I thought I would share from my experience!

As you can imagine, with me being in my final year, the library is my second home at the moment! It’s a great facility with a wide range of books and other material that you can use for your assignments. There is plenty of space to study in silence, but I also take advantage of collaborative areas like our fit-for-purpose techno booths.

The University recently opened up the Student Centre, which I think has really become the hub of the Talbot campus. It’s the home of our Student Union, who support us by running the extra-curricular activities like clubs and societies (as well as some other great initiatives!). One thing you can get involved in is radio broadcasting through our onsite station, Nerve Radio!

I’m into sport, so I often fit in a workout in the onsite gym in between classes. If that’s something you’re into (or would like to try), the University give reduced rates in Fresher’s week to give you a taster of what it’s like.

One of the things that I took advantage of in town is the opportunity to work part-time. I transferred from my local Argos and it was easy to work since I lived in the middle of town.

I hope that offers you a different angle to what has already been said!

Sorry for the late reply.

I personally love the course. It’s very practical and that’s what I prefer. We are always in some sort of production. As we are in post-production editing one piece we have to be in pre-production planning the next. It’s busy but lots of fun.

In my first year I did modules such as these:

The language of Television: In this module we got to create production such as an advert based around a word, a documentary based on a character and a drama. We also had to produce a 15 minute live show in our HD studio and smaller productions in our foyer studios for lunch time viewers.

Television craft skills: In this module we learnt the crafts skills required to make television. This included editing classes and camera, sound and lighting workshops. We also learn all the roles in the studio.

Production Portfolio: In this module we created a drama based on a painting and a documentary based on a location. Then in the studio we had to create a live fashion show and music show

Collaborative project: For our collaborative project we worked with a range of courses to produce a comedy Blap for Channel 4

Alongside all these productions we also had to do some theory work and did modules such as Developing arguments and Discipline and research. In the second year you get to pick your own theory options. For example, I picked Media, Children and Childhood as well as Media, Gender and the Body.

In the second year we have also split in half. Half the year you do location productions and the other half of the year you work in the studio. You also get to pick specialisms from camera and lighting, editing, sound and production management.

I couldn’t see myself doing any other course now. What I love most about it is all the lecturers are hands on and really enthusiastic about the course. Also where you have to make so stuff you get to work really closely with your course mates and as a result make a lot of friends.

In terms of Bournemouth Arts, they don’t do a Television course. They focus more on film. In terms of Television Bournemouth has a really good reputation and is accredited by Skillset. As I don’t do film or study at Arts I can’t really tell you to much information on that one – Sorry!

I would ignore most of these posts as they're used by ambassadors paid to write good reviews. Extremely poor conduct by Bournemouth University having unmarked ambassador accounts. If people ask for opinions then they should receive information from an official account if coming from an ambassador so biased views are clearly shown to the reader.

We think our ambassadors are great. Everything they write is in their own words, and we encourage them to be completely honest. They know BU inside out, plus they know what it's really like to be a BU student. We think it's much better for you to hear about life as a student from a real student, rather than a member of staff. We're on hand if you've got any technical questions or want to ask us anything.

There are also plenty of helpful BU students on TSR who are not official student ambassadors. If you spot any, they're great people to ask questions as well!

It's alright having a pinned post in the BU forum but your ambassadors are also going on other forums where people are not going to see that they are paid to write reviews. Most threads I see in this forum are bombarded with answers from loads of ambassadors, and how many people are going to read the pinned post realising that these accounts are paid ambassadors?

Prospective students have a right to know if information is coming from an ambassador or not, I don't care if you say you tell them to be honest because you are still paying the ambassadors to do a job. Most other universities I know have officially marked ambassador accounts, and I am perfectly happy with that. I then know that a review is likely to have a bit of bias.

Hi. I'd have to agree with Kbradders with this one. I came onto this post hoping to find student opinions with no bias, so maybe any ambassadors replying to a thread could start that they are ambassadors.

They all love using TSR and everything they say is their own opinion and their own words - whether that's positive or negative. They're here to offer advice, as we know that there isn't always someone around to answer a specific question. And I'm sure there are some things you'd prefer to hear from current students rather than staff - our night life knowledge for example is probably a bit outdated!

They do often introduce themselves as ambassadors, but we'll be sure to ask them if they could try and do this each time they're in a new thread, just so you're clear.
