The Student Room Group

Trump already controls the Presidential contest.

Disregard how outrageous you think he is, just for a second. Think about this rationally.

The guy may as well be President. He's setting the national agenda. They've got all of the biggest topics imaginable to discuss from illegal immigration to terrorism from Obamacare to gun crime, and yet, what - rather who - is the only thing anyone is discussing?

Donald Trump. According to reports, he's getting more coverage than the ENTIRE democratic field.

It doesn't matter which direction you look. Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Hilary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, even our own Prime Minister, Scotland Yard and the Mayor of London...from minute one (and I'm sure to the end of the campaign to be made Republican nominee) the MSM hasn't stopped talking about Trump.

Do you know what is driving them really insane, though? I read RushLimbaugh.com the other day and he made a terrific point - they can't do anything about it. They've thrown everything at him, including the kitchen sink; they can't humiliate him, they can't embarrass him, they can't get anywhere near him - even Reuters are making up stories about him.

It's driving them insane; the media, so used to being able to control and determine the narrative, so used to being able to make or break candidates, has lost any and all control - everything now comes back to what Trump says, and Trump has direct access to his voters.

The more they throw at him, the more people support him. Every time they try and kick the **** out of him, he just comes back bigger.

And as far as Trump is concerned, it's great. All he needs to do is say something utterly outrageous and the entire MSM, as well as every politician, will talk about it, voice an opinion and comment on it (not even just in the US, but all over the world). Over and over and over and over again.

He may as well be President of the USA, they're treating him like he is.

I mean, how many threads are there, even on TSR, about Trump?

It's hilarious. Divorce yourself from his politics for a second and the guy is a genius - the whole of western civilisation is talking about him!

They said the same thing about Obama. Oh, and Bush.

The truth is, no-one has any idea. What's amazing, as far as I'm concerned, from a non-political perspective, is just how much this guy has gone from a nobody on the political stage to setting and controlling the national conversation.

The support behind him seems resolute and unwavering, too. Everything he says is an attack on what many of his voters perceive the problem to be - the totalitarian nature of political correctness. Every time he opens his mouth, he's on the front pages, and across every news broadcast.

I think that's more because there are like 16 nominees for the Republicans and Trump simply wants to cut down the field a little.

Should he win the nomination, it'll come back to bite him in the ass.
Thankfully what he lacks is the ability to actually implement his awful ideas. For that, you need to win an election (and in his case amend a constitution, but we'll let the slide for now). The problem for people like him is that the attention also energises his opponents - Americans who don't like him who may otherwise have stayed at home will go out, vote Clinton and make her President.

I don't think anybody else has managed to get universal condemnation from different countries and their own party before the presidential election has even started.

I suppose one positive thing is that America's incredibly inefficient and broken congress and senate system might save us in the terrible situation that Trump does get into power because fortunately, even most of the republicans aren't as utterly crazy as Trump is so I find it difficult to believe that he'd be able to implement most of his insanity.

So is he actually going to end up being President then, or is he going to end up putting a Democrat, and even worse a woman in the White House?

We heard all this about how great Marine Le Pen was. She was dominating French politics, she was shaping the destiny of the Presidency.

Result - she ended up putting a Socialist President who started taxing the rich at 90% or whatever. Way to go Marine.

Didn't people say this of the BNP once upon a time? Even recently of UKIP?

Anwyas, Bill Clinton is the real person that's shaping the election,Trump is just his puppet. He'll never become president so lets just sit back and enjoy the free entertainment he's offering.
For all that people laugh at him and he plays the blustering fool, lets not kid ourselves here. He is only one act of mass destruction from being elected president of The United States.
ISIS get their hands on a nuclear device and detonate it in an American port or poison a cities water supply leading to 50,00 dead and he will be elected overnight by a landslide. Not only that but he could write his own wish list that would make his latest proposals look like a Liberal party leaflet.
He reminds me of the Presidential candidate Greg Stillson (Martin Sheen) in "The Dead Zone"
