Heart Pounding

Ok so basically this happens every night without fail for around 4 or 5 months. It started with palpitations and a general flipping of the heart but now it full on races and i can't control it or seem to make it beat slower. It gets quite uncomfortable as i can feel every single beat which makes me more panicked. I did go to the doctors about it and they just said to be less stressed which was not helpful at all so does anyone know how i can make it slow down like with self help or something idek i just want it to stop. For instance it is pounding now (at rest) and i can actually see the rhythm moving my shirt :s-smilie:
responses appreciated  xx

Might be a problem with your natural pacemaker; go to a different doctor or a cardiology specialist and see if you can get their opinion because that doesn't sound healthy
I have this continuously, so much so that it now happens in the day :frown: for me, i know it's anxiety. do you have any other symptoms that could link to this? (not trying to push a diagnosis on you, just a suggestion!) for example, shaking, sweating hands, excessive worrying, stomach upset, choking sensations, trouble breathing?

I used to suffer from this terribly, I know the exact feeling. I had online therapy (NHS) last year which helped quite a bit - it doesn't clear it up right away you have to really work at it and find the motivation to help yourself. You can overcome the anxiety!! Believe in yourself and get support

oh - to add, I went to the doc years ago and told her my heart felt like it was going to burst out of my chest and that I can see my shirt moving with my heartbeat but she said my heart was fine. Wasn't until last year I got help for my anxiety which is/was the cause.

I used to suffer from regular palpitations that would sometimes go on for quite a while and become uncomfortable. After having an ECG and echocardiogram done (which both came back perfectly normal) I realised that my palpitations were caused by stress, mostly when worrying about things or when under pressure. In a weird way, the more I worried about my palpitations, the more I experienced them!

I'd recommend looking for a trigger, what is it that starts your symptoms off? Maybe try relaxing (cliche I know) or changing your body position to see if that helps, or doing some relaxing breathing. If you're still worried and they don't go away, go back to your GP and request and ECG.

Go to a doctor again and if they still say to e less stressed, go to a different doctor. This needs to be checked out ASAP.

Aww well most people tend to be nice and friendly so you shouldn't be afraid to talk to them. What's more, they'll probably understand and appreciate your anxiety, and help you to feel more comfortable

And life's too short to worry about exams and things because you can only give it your best shot. It certainly shouldn't get you down because so many other things matter a lot more (e.g. all the things and people that make you happy).

Just try to relax, e.g by putting some relaxing/happy music on and focussing on all the positives :hugs:

what is an echocardiogram? i think it is stress bc the doctor listened to my heart with a stethoscope and said he couldn't hear anything wrong with it just that it was too fast (108bpm). yes that is true
i honestly don't know, some things are obvious such as today when i needed to see a teacher i fellt like my heart was gonna burst out of my chest but just now i was just sat here on tsr and it just went through the roof pounding really hard  thank you xxx

it isn't what they recommend, it was CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) which is an active form of therapy which requires you to find what the cause of stress is, and you and the therapist will, together, find a way for you to overcome it by changing your behaviour. Then they check to see if you are doing it and how well it is working for you. For example, one of my issues was speaking in front of a crowd so me and my therapist came up with the idea of doing a presentation in class which did actually help.

But for you it will be different - start by trying to find the causes and I do suggest trying online CBT. It's less scary when you don't have to be in the room with them!! Here's the link to the one I used.

An 'echo' is just an ultrasound scan of your heart, similar to what they use to scan a lady when she's pregnant. It looks at the structure of your heart (such as muscle thickness and valve function) and can also see the blood flow through it. All completely harmless!

Ahh I'm the same, especially with people I don't know, my heart will often start pounding! Assuming there's nothing physically wrong, try to remain calm and not worry - ever since I started to control my mild anxiety better, I very rarely have palpitations now!

i am glad that it worked out for you alright  idk how i would feel about that tho, i find it awkward and stressful enough talking to people so i think it would just make me more anxious talking to a stranger  xx
ooh i just saw the online one  thank you, i will give that a go x

I thought that too before I started, but it is actually a lot easier speaking to a stranger about your problems than someone you know because you know the stranger has no reason to judge you (e.g. unlike a mum who worries and cares for you and just tells you it will be ok in the end which doesn't help the present).

I'm glad you're going to try it  it's not for everyone but made me learn a lot of things about myself (in a good way!!)
