He found it in a public place therefore someone else prior to him could have easily taken some money and he just has to deny he took any (Y)

oh well now hes posted a thread about it the police will find out... jk idk hes creating more doubt / worry for himself

Spoiler

I'm pretty sure that if you hand something into the police, they'll give it back to you if it isn't claimed within 3 months. Given that there's a decent chance this money was part of something illegal, it probably won't be claimed.

That said, the police might just keep it for the same reason.
Hand it in to the police, if they can't find the original owner than its yours as its you have done all what's reasonable to find the owner- worth doing instead of getting into trouble especially if there is CCTV! Also if handing it in keep pestering them whether they've found the true owner so they can't keep it
it could be payment to a hitman person.... they will not be pleased if you keep it

There's CCTV at the station, the police could very easily see that there wasn't anyone who took money before hand, or even if there was and the amount was originally £10k or something, the police will investigate the money and make sure every penny is accounted for.

As for the OP, alternatively, if the money was for illicit purposes, it's unlikely that the original owner would do anything to encourage suspicion, though considering that it was left in a public place and there are old notes included too, it's more likely that it wasn't for illicit purposes and some poor sod lost his travel money or something. (In which case they'd go to the police, and the police would go to you).

So it's up to you OP is you want to take the risk, though I'm thinking of starting up a business, and am gonna need around £4k to get things off the ground. If you wanna turn that £7k into a whole lot more, PM me

Use your head. Who carries that much money around with them? My bet is on a criminal. They will want their money back and now you've posted it online. If you keep it don't be too surprised to find someone "knocking" one day.
The only smart thing to do is hand it in. If it isn't a criminal's money then you should try your best to get it back to the person it belongs to.
If you fail to hand it in then you commit the offence of theft by finding

If the money is reported lost, the CCTV can track you back to your entry to the station and the Oyster card details will show your identity. Given the value of the theft ( which is what you've done) they will invest the time in finding you.

Although it is generally elderly people, some people don't trust banks or need cash to buy a car.

I found £7,000 at Earls Court underground station yesterday.

It was inside a plastic bag on a bench platform.

There is CCTV at the station.

Who should I declare the money to?

Is it 'theft' if I decide to keep the money?

Photo included.

Hand it in to the police. A normal person doesn't just leave seven grand on a bench in a clear bag. It's possible it was a dead drop for a drugs exchange.

Regardless, Theft by Finding is a criminal offence.

From someone with some life experience whose moral compass may be swayed by such experience. I would personally hold on to it. Put in a shoebox under your bed and forget about t for the meanwhile. Yes it may be exciting to be able to buy something extra-ordinary but really 7k is like one handbag to some people.

It is not a life-changing amount of money. How can you go about making use of it without telling close friends / family who will spend it for you, so keep to spending £20 at a time and mostly making additions to your normal spending.. so a new pair of shoes, you might add an extra £20 to them, you and your friends want to eat at nandos afterwards then great, just don't offer to pay £100 for the meal! The best way to burn through it is on the weekend so where you might have had £20 for the night you can can spend £50 and make good use of investing in socialising with friends and meeting new people, finding your moment to buy them a drink and be cool about it and no-one will be the wiser.

You have to remember you found it at one of the busiest train stations in the country with thousands of people going through there each day and you would be none the wiser that this money existed. It will still exist once it has gone from your hands.

You might not have had that kind of money to burn before but you will be amazed how fast it goes..

To be honest it would probably be best spent on starting your career, if you wanted to get into business, the best way to impress is a nice suit and you will have your travel costs sorted.

Remember not to deposit it in your bank account at the notes have serial numbers and the police will know where the money is.

Good luck, spend it wisely and in good time and make it do something for you.

Dont spend it straight away.

Wait for like a month or two, and if nothing happens, then spend it.

If the money was gained illegally then that's all the more reason to keep it.

Because if it was legitimate whoever lost it would likely go to the police to help them reclaim it, but if it's illegitimate money then they're obvs not going to go to he police about it and the police will likely never know about it.

Op, should hold onto it. If nothing happens after a couple of months, the he can spend it

Police radio: "The suspect is a black male between 5'5 and 6'5 in height"

Not reporting it to the police is an offence. So report it.

Everyone else: Remember that its against TSR rules to assist or encourage an illegal activity.
It's illegal to keep it. If it was owned by a legitimate person (? an elderly person because of the out of circulation notes) then they have probably already notified the police. Hand it in and then if it's not claimed within 3 months it's yours anyway, to spend how you like, with a clear conscience.
stop posting on here and just write your moral philosophy essay?
It could belong to a criminal or an owner of a small shop taking their takings to the bank. You don't know.
