Can someone explain to me how the escalator question was 36? It took her 90 seconds to walk up it and 60 seconds standing still. I got 45 seconds.

let the distance be d.
let the speed of the escalator be x and the speed of her walking be y.
60 = d/x
90 = d/y
rearrange them to get
60x = d
90y = d
60x = 90y
x = 90y/60 = 3y/2
the speed when she is walking up a working escalator = x+y = (3y/2) + y = 5y/2
so the time is = d/(5y/2) = 2d/5y = (2/5)(d/y) = (2/5)(90) = 36

. I got into the intermediate olympiad in the last two years and for this one the maximum mark I could get is 95. Oh well, time to crack down on my GCSE's.
