I just moved to "Application with Degree Committee!"

On the Cambridge site, it says that BOGS will look at your application within 7 days from now.

Congratulations! Am I right in thinking that this is basically an acceptance? Degree Committee and BoGS are just administrative, right?

I just edited my previous post. Look at the attached link. I would really like to think that BOGS is just administrative but I'm going to remain a bit hesitant. To be honest however, it is really hard to contain my excitement at the prospect that we might just be a few day/hours away from a legitimate acceptance.

I'm struggling to interpret what this means though. Its too early to go nuts, but we have at least been recommended an offer by the department?? If this is correct, it sounds like we're half way there!

Welcome to studentroom! Congrats on the other offers, sounds like a very comfortable position to be in! I agree further study sounds like a good idea if you're not sure where you want to specialise. And if you complete part 3 then perhaps you could apply to some of the big US uni's too (more prestige i guess!), rather than only reapply to oxford/sheffield?

As for asking for an extension, I went through this. I'm currently holding an offer for an MSc in Theoretical Physics at Imperial, and had to ask for an extension of the deadline, for which they were happy to do so. I'm not sure if this is standard, but I don't see why you should not ask. Oxford I could imagine being more reluctant!

Hi all,
First congratulations to those that have moved on to the next stage of the selection process and good luck too all. I am still on the "under consideration by the department" stage.

I had a couple of questions. I've been looking around and although there are past papers for part three easily accessible it seems like the solutions are not made available at all. For me this would be a big problem as I feel I learn a lot from looking at past papers and seeing how these questions are solved. Have you guys considered this and what do you guys think?

Also I have looked around for notes for each module and any lecture notes or books available and it seems like it is all over the place and even the notes them self are very short hand and without any real in depth analysis. So it seems we will rely heavily on lectures and taking out own note in lectures. I have to confess that I am not very good at this, I am much more suited to learning from typed lecture notes provided by the module leader which I work through at my own pace.

All in all I feel Cambridge is very traditional in its teach methods and I would struggle to keep up. Have you guys heard any differnt to this? Am I missing some website or moodle page only accessible by Cambridge students which has a lot of resources and very detailed lecture notes? Do the lecturers write out the notes in detail on the board in each lecture or do they simply come in and discuss what they wish and leave?

Hey Quantman!

To be perfectly honest, I haven't at all considered the difficulty of part III. I told myself that I would worry about it only after I was accepted (primarily over summer). Honestly, regardless of the challenges, I'll take it on. Going to Cambridge has been my dream for a while, and I'd just be thrilled to go!

Hi! I'm pretty much the same, I rely on using past papers and typed notes. I don't know what really to expect at Cambridge (except David tongs notes which are pretty good) but I don't think it should affect your decision. In academia good notes and pastpapers won't be usually be available, so part 3 will be good practice in making use of a range of resources. Textbooks will be the next best thing (detailed analysis + questions with answers)

Agreed, does either of you know if it's too early to celebrate? Have either of you seen a rejection at this point before?

I'm going to wait for a definitive answer before celebrating. All I know is that people on the other forum seem very confident an offer will follow, but I'll believe it when I see it :smile:

That's a good way to look at it - I have to admit, my excitement got the best of me. On other forums, I've seen that the response time is within 3 weeks for the official approval from BOGS. I wonder what the funding status will be, did you apply for Gates/Cambridge? Or maybe University funding?

I haven't received anything today either unfortunately, I was hoping that they would get back to us ASAP. Anywho, I applied for the Gates/Cambridge and that was all. I should have applied for the Cambridge trust but my advisor did not mention that one to me until it was too late. No matter, I'm sure we'll hear back soon.
