Ok I might get some stick because this is a bit early but there's no harm right? The sooner we start the more prepared we are.

GCSEs - 6 A*s Chemistry Physics Maths Further Maths French Music
6 As Biology History Economics English Lang English Lit RE

AS - Biology Chemistry Maths Economics

Work Experience - Volunteer at King's, 1 week with a cardiothoracic surgeon, 1 week GP, 1 week shadowing a doctor.

Potential unis - Cambridge (if my AS modules are good enough, maybe...)
King's
UCL
(haven chosen a 3rd/4th yet)

Discuss anything related to applying to study Medicine at University. What did you guys get at GCSE/aiming for at A Level?

ahh you're going to Lourdes! I'm very jealous haha.

Getting work experience is really hard though, I completely understand. I don't have any contacts and I have been rejected from basically all the schemes I have applied for! (or I don't qualify i.e. outside catchment, not first in my family to go to uni etc etc). Ugh why is it so hard?

You have loads of volunteering though, so you should be fine. What a levels are you taking btw??

AS: Biology chemistry and philosophy&ethics (only 3alevels)

Work experience:
- 3 months Oxfam charity
- 1 week pharmacy in Nigeria
- Teachers assistance at primary school assisting disadvantage students
-1 week with cardiologist
-1 week Gasternologist in Easter

Volunteering:
- Royal Hospital of neuro-disability
- A&E volunteer
- volunteer at care home
- shopmoilibility escort (breaks)
- volunteer at RNIH blind people assistance
-Ronald MacDonald families with critically ill children
- I did crisis at Christmas for homeless people, making there Christmas great

Please be honest, according to my profile, where would be best for me, and on a scale of 1 to 10 (increasing strength), how strong would you say my application is? I want to apply to Plymouth and like Exeter!

I wanted to do stuff like medicine taster courses but I didnt get in
Work Experience: Volunteering at care home for the elderly and a day in x ray department at croydon hospital and apart from that nothing
I tried looking for some using official ways but I didnt get anything, so I was going to contact doctors directly but I dont know any that I would know for sure would take me on. Anyone that has done work experience in hospitals in london, HELP ME

How on earth did you find so much work experience?

Mixture tbh. I'm actually loving chemistry and maths atm! (good teachers, interesting work etc); biology is pretty standard but I hate physics so much.

I don't think I have regretted anything more than taking physics. Any previous enjoyment I felt for the subject has died completely and I have the sh*test teacher I have ever met. I've ranted about this on another thread lol, but even though 5+ students have complained (parents emailing; talking to head of year etc) nothing has been done.

I completely understand that it's your own responsibility at A level and you can't blame your bad grades on an awful teacher, but as I hate the subject so much atm, I find it so so hard to do independent work.

Anyway, what about you haha? Hopefully you're having a better subject experience than me

I have to agree with you on physics (probably not the best thing to do, but ah well). I used to take it in addition to my current subjects, but I had to drop it for basically the same reasons as you, although there was the part about the electricity part being boring

I love my current subjects though! Maths and Further Maths are going really well, and we have under 2 modules left to do, which is good. Chemistry is going really well (best in the year in my mock!), probably because I have a great teacher, and biology, I love it, and it's going quite well, but I feel like we're going too slow! I feel like I might have to self study a lot of the units in it, and I find it hard to just do it myself, which I can tell will be my downfall already!

What is it with physics?

I've started to not like it as much since taking it at AS. My teachers are okay, but I had a really amazing teacher at GCSE, who made everything seem so simple.

But I'm okay at it, (found out I got an A in my mock!) I just don't enjoy it very much.

I do love chemistry though, it is easily my favourite subject!

I think it may just be plagued with bad content...

Work Experience - 3 day programme with BHSCT shadowing a palliative care consultant and a paediatric endocrinologist. Shadowed a biochemist working on a multi drug resistant protein.

I've been set on applying for Oxford since year 10 but not sure because it could be a wasted choice... Also need much more work experience; it's so hard to get hospital placements

I applied this year for medicine entry and I am currently holding an offer.
I'm not sure if you've looked into this, but three of your university choices are BMAT universities. Whilst they are all brilliant choices, it's very risky as the BMAT can go very wrong and you won't know your results until after you apply! If I use myself as an example, I got 14A*s at GCSE and was predicted A*A*A* at A Level. My BMAT wasn't the best so I got a pre-interview rejection from Oxford which didn't bother me too much as I had already received an interview at that point from my first choice university, but it was still pretty hard as I'd done well in my GCSEs. Oxford was my only BMAT university, and I'm glad I took the advice of others in only applying to one (maximum two they said) BMAT universities.

Have you looked at any other GCSE heavy medical schools?

The choices I put down are by no means final and are just a few I am drawn towards at the moment. Being more realistic; Imperial, KCL, QUB, +1 more but again, nothing final. I've looked at Birmingham/Cardiff etc, but i'm not sure I would like to study in those cities.

I'd like to drop phys n further but pick up spanish as an AS next year - always enjoyed it

1 week in Renal Department of local hospital

Volunteering:

Meal-time at the hospital every week
Sunrise + Homework Club
Peer Mentoring
Uganda Trip (Our school works with a school there helping them expand their facilities so I'll be going for 2 weeks in the summer)

Not really sure where to apply yet, but I really need to work on my experience - if anyone has any advice on how to get more experience please tell me also if there's other ways I can improve my application

I have just finished work experience with a cardiologist and it was amazing!
And i have A&E, gasternology+ gyn/ob planned.
What I did was email all the consultants the entire hospital basically. I know it's long but it does work, you will get a few yeses.
Make sure it's at least 6 weeks prior to the time you want to start your placement so if you want to do some work experience in the Easter holiday, start emailing them now.
If you want a model email, message me i will give you mine! Also do a google saerch of "hospital work experience 2016" and you should find forms which i filled too and places. If you are based in London and you want work experience at great ormand street hospital, message me too.
