NHS Scientist Training Programme 2016 applicants!

Anyone who has applied previously have any idea roughly what percentage make it through the short listing?

I'm not 100% sure how it works, when people say long-listed are these the people that make it through the tests? Then are their applications read and candidates are short listed based on that? On our application page is says short-listing score, so I assume we actually get "scored" on our applications? Anyone have any idea what criteria they use to score you, seems like it would be quite qualitative than quantitative and I assume only one assessor looks at your application, could this not lead to bias?!

I have done my tests 3 weeks ago and haven't had an confirmation e-mail as well. Both of them are 'completed' on Oriel. So do not worry. Apparently not everyone got and e-mail (maybe some quirk of their system.)

I got one saying "thank you for completing our tests, but you were a silly numpty during the tests, therefore we will not consider you. You even had a calculator for Pete's sake!"

Does anyone know if they combine your results for maths and logical? If you're in the bottom 30% for Maths but in top 70% for logical, do you still have a chance or no?

I was wondering this too. I'm hoping they take an average of the two because the logics one went a lot better than the numerical. Does anyone know what the pass mark was in previous years?

Also I'm guessing that 'longlisted' just means you've passed the tests and your application is going to be considered?

Oh glad it wasn't just me that got that email!
Should i read into the fact they have only sent certain people a thank you for completing the tests email, or am i being paranoid ?

Paranoid. Don't worry about it, if you've completed the tests then you HAVE completed the tests!!!

hahah well i got a thankyou email so maybe the thankyou email was the polite way of saying "we won't be contacting you again"

If you still feel uneasy you can just quickly e-mail NSHS recruitment and ask them about it. I am sure they will say that it does not matter, but you can feel better
Longlisted = Passed the online tests and will have your application read. Your status will change to longlisted by Thursday this week (source: last year we found out 2 days after the test deadline, and this year shortlisting starts Thursday so longlisting must be done by then).

As for q's about the tests:
-About 30% of people failed to get longlisted in 2014.
-Don't sweat about confirmation emails, if your Oriel says "completed" next to each test you are fine.
-Don't sweat about finding the tests awful, they are adaptive aka everyone is supposed to feel it was awful. Only a few days to wait, try distract yourself with something else until then  Everyone here thought they were awful, I doubt everyone here failed.

Shortlisted = Got invited to Interview. Will take a few weeks for us to find out if we are called for interview.

I absolutely agree here. I wish they would just automatically tell you if you will not be long listed. Surely they have software to do that?!

Definitely paranoid. Mine was crap, so sending me an email either means nothing, or something bad.

I think you're scored between 0-3 for each criteria on the person specification and ranked that way. I can't remember where, but I think I read two people score each application.

I'd guess hearing tomorrow if your test scores are really bad. Other jobs I have applied for pretty much told me an hour after if I was unsuccessful at their psychometric tests.

Thanks for your reply. I have had a somewhat long route in science. I did a BSc Hons (1st class) in Biomedical Science during which I did a placement year and got my state registration to practice as a Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry. Decided instead to then to an MRes in medical and molecular biosciences (specialising in cancer and immunology with Distinction) then did a PhD in Neuroimmunology (it was looking at post-translational modification of proteins in multiple sclerosis so embodied both biochemistry and immunology). I now work as a postdoc in immunology specifically working on pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. This involves lots of lab work but also recruiting patients to the study and consenting/taking blood from patients with rheumtoid arthritis at a hospital in london (I am also now a qualified phlebotomist so I can take blood from my research patients). I have applied this year for the first time for STP as I no longer feel like I want to continue in academia research as I only ever seem to get funding for 12 months at a time, so STP seems like a good move in the right direction as I can still do research but in an nhs setting with patients (and more job security). I have always thought about STP training but never been brave enough to take the plunge! I have applied for immunology (1st choice) and biochemistry 2nd choice.

Thanks for the advice

Wow that's pretty amazing. I applied for first place in biochem and second place immunology.. I'm currently studying an MRes in cancer and immunology! But have no where near as much experience as you! Good luck!
Are you guys sure that if the answer was picked but ran out of time to click submit it will still be counted??? I ran out of 1 second like that for about 3 questions 😭😭😭
Where are people getting Thursday as the date for the results from? Have they said that will be when we find out if we're long listed? Seem to remember it taking a lot longer than that last year!

Last year we found out 2 days after the test deadline. The guidance also states shortlisting starts from Thursday

And answers do count if not submitted on the talent q tests, it says so on their website

Good luck to everyone.

I applied last night and I think it could've gone a lot better than it did. I always struggle to gauge how the logic tests go (and there were a couple that were WTF, but I screenshotted one and looked at it at the end and immediately saw the pattern, ugh). The numerical test wasn't great either. I have a physics degree (lol) but the timer makes me panic. Also I think I bombed the last 3 questions because I misread the footnote. Oops.

Whenever I've done these in the past it tends to be an automated 'you passed' or 'you failed'. I hope we do find out on Thurs.

P.S. I'm going for medical physics, anyone else?

Me too! I wonder how many people applied for Medical Physics. The tests were pretty bad, especially considering im fast at doing calculations and at spotting patterns. Ergh. Hope we get in!
Medical physics here too...also found the tests horrendous. Hoping we all hear something soon !
