Gay teacher fired after sex tape leaked by hacker

A gay teacher in Arkansas has been fired after a homophobic hacker broke into his DropBox account, which had a video made by the teacher of him with another consulting adult male, was linked to other teachers and students at the school.

What is shocking is that this teacher was the victim of a crime, he had done nothing wrong. He was found to have done nothing wrong by the Arkansas Department of Education, but the school fired him anyway (after filing ethics charges against him with the Department, which were found to be baseless)

I doubt he wants his job back anyway.

Surely that counts as unfair dismissal. I think he would definitely have a court case considering that he'd done nothing wrong. It's disgusting that someone would do that consciously knowing that they're ruining someone's life.
At the same time it was a mistake on his part to upload it to cloud storage which is notoriously insecure. I thought that it was common knowledge by now, it's the worst place to save something private that you don't want people seeing.
What happened to him was awful and the way he's been treated is appalling but I think there's things that we can learn from this. There's nothing he can do now apart from move on and rebuild his life.

Americans tend to have few employment rights. Most American employment is "at will", which means the employer can dismiss the employee at any time and for any reason.

Also, it is not illegal in the State of Arkansas to fire someone for reasons that tend to discriminate on the basis of sexuality. I'd say his best prospect is that he will be picked up by another school in a more liberal state

That seems a little bit victim blamey, in the circumstances.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure he would have left anyway... I know that's not the point but, yeah.
Tbh would you want to continue working there, if I was a teacher and knew my sex tape was leaked to all my students and colleagues I'd just look for work elsewhere

I said right after that I thought it was general knowledge not to put private things online in cloud storage considering all of the cloud hackings that have happened in the past to celebrities and other innocent people.
Cloud may seem safe but it isn't secure and it never has been and never will be. Facebook, twitter, tumblr people's accounts are hacked all the time y'know.
I honestly didn't mean it to seem victim blamey but to me it's common sense not to put private things like that online at all.
I do honestly feel bad for him. What happened to him isn't fair and he shouldn't have lost his job.
It is not homophobic or discriminatory to fire him. It is just prudish. The exact same action would be taken if a heterosexual teacher had a sex taped leaked. I think it is reasonable for the school to assert that distributing a sex tape of any faculty member, automatically disqualifies them from working in that district. The distraction to the learning environment would be substantial if they were to remain.

This isn't the first time that cloud storage has been hacked. It is not secure, see The Fappening for more details.

A sex tape was leaked as in a sex tape. Ya know, people have sex on camera? I'm sure if he was straight or made a straight sex tape he would've been fired too. Got nothin to do with the fact he's gay. Teachers with any history like that get fired too. Although it isn't his fault it was leaked, the fact it was leaked and open to the public make the school look bad to still have him. Its like having a lowkey porn star as a teacher at your school. It ruins your reputation to have them represent a teacher. This reminds of a story of this woman whose ex bf made a sex tape of her and released as revenge then she couldn't get a decent job and rejected multiple times. Not sayin its his fault but it isn't "homophobic" at all the fire a gay teacher with a leaked sex tape.

Straight or gay, he would've been fired.

No i'm not but i do like bananas though. Well he would've gotten fired anyway or found himself a new job. Teachers getting fired for leaked sex tapes even when not at fault is pretty common. But hey he's gay and that's the main reason he was fired because it was a gay sex tape, right?

If he was fired on the basis of his sexual orientation only, it's definitely discriminatory.
