STP Alternatives ?

I know that the NHS scientist training programme (STP) is very competitive, and was wondering if anybody was aware of any similar schemes that might exist?

if you mean a graduate training scheme that makes you a healthcare scientist i dont think there is another one like it, it was a program made to fill the NHS specific deficit of specific scientists.
However, if you want to get into healthcare/clinical science there are other routes usually starting as a lab technician and then registering as a healthcare scientist. Check out the following accreditation programs to see what you need to be considered
http://www.hpc-uk.org/
http://www.ahcs.ac.uk/
also might be worth talking to the STP accrediting people to see what other routes they think is best. ALso shadowing your ideal position and being clear about what you exactly want to do and working your way in is useful.
Ive heard having a PhD helps too to get into clinical science...

If its any comfort i met a guy who worked in a genomics lab doing exactly what someone who would have done STP in genomics would do. He started out as a biomed graduate doing lab work and moved up the ladder. He is not accredited but his job is the same and he can always get accredited. Plus i think it is easier to get into the STP program as an in-service, especially if you have a good history with your employers and have been there for a while, This guy didnt do the STP in service because he wasnt guaranteed a job at the end and because the training salary was significantly lower than his current one.. but the job satisfaction was the same, except he cant be called a 'genomic healthcare scientist'. Semantics?
Hope this helps ( this is not all there is out there so keeo researching and speaking to people)
