Your college/university notifies SAAS if your attendance is concerning to them - I imagine different universities/colleges have different levels for what they consider non-attendance. According to the SAAS website they'll write to you if this happens: http://www.saas.gov.uk/my_money/payments.htm (and if you start attending again then they'll just pay it through later).

Are you missing lectures/tutorials for any particular reason? Often you can self-certify sickness absence for a period of time or send through evidence if something else is preventing you from attending. Look in your student/course handbook to find out what your course rules are and who or how you need to notify for absences to be authorised.

For example http://www.qmu.ac.uk/quality/gr/Student%20Attendance%20Policy%20-%202015.pdf explains how QMU handle attendance (if you're absent for a full week they write to you and if you don't respond within a second week they notify SAAS - you can self certify absence of 1 week or less unless that covers exams).
