The definition cannot help until you have an understanding of its application.


You can see that when the U.V light is illuminated on the cathode plate, electrons are ejected towards the anode. When the potential difference across the plate is adjusted as to make the anode plate negative (and the cathode positive) until no electron can be ejected from the cathode, the potential difference is the stopping potential because it is at this point that the potential difference has "stopped" the electrons from being ejected.
