Accommodation for Minors

Does anyone at UoM know about the regulations regarding minors staying in the dorms?
I got an email from them telling me that i will be allowed to stay in some of the residential halls, and that i need aguardian or parent with me in manchester till i turn 18.

The thing is I'm from India, and my parents aren't free enough to stay in manchester for 22 days (course starts on the 1st of september, and I'll be 18 on the 22nd of september).

So will i get like a random guardian or something? Anyone know the details of such situations?

Parents/Guardians not Resident in the UK

If you are under 17 on 1st of September at the year of entry you are requiredto have a UK based guardian until the end of the academic year when youturn 17 (e.g. if your 17th birthday is in November you are required to have aUK based guardian until the end of the last semester in the academic year;usually last semester finishes in the beginning of June).

Where parents/guardians are not resident in the UK it may be necessary toappoint a UK-based guardian for a student under 18 on entry. Where this isthe case the admitting School will inform you about the requirement.


It is a common (universal?) requirement for the many international students in UK boarding schools to have a UK-based guardian, so there are companies that will provide a guardian, for a fee. They wouldn't stay in your halls etc. - it's just that they would be called if you were very ill, for instance. See this http://www.ukboardingschools.com/advice/uk-guardians/#.VtIBjfmLTIU

I suspect that the university will be happy to accept someone from one of those organisations, though you would be wise to ask.

It's also worth noting that you won't need to be in Manchester from 1st September - international orientation doesn't start until mid-September, regardless of what it says on UCAS track.
