The Student Room Group

Pathway programs for international students, are they any good ?

i applied for lancaster university through study group and got into law foundation year leading to llb. i already hold an offer from coventry university for llb. i really like lancaster but i am a bit confused, it would be nice if someone could help me out
Exactly what course are they offering you? Law with foundation means you do an extra year at the beginning and then transfer onto the first year of the LLB Law degree. If that is what they're offering, it might be worth doing; you need to decide if you like Lancaster enough to spend an extra year studying (and the increased cost). The 'International Foundation Course' is however a completely different thing. It's a huge waste of money, and as far as I know, there is no guarantee you can do the degree you want afterwards.

Go and apply to University of Liverpool. If they tell you that you have to do a foundation year in their Liverpool College, then go for it.

You are from Pakistan. It is a poor and corrupt country. Even if you graduate in UK and return to Pakistan, you will not make any money as a lawyer in Pakistan. I am sure you want a good life for yourself and your family. If you graduate from University of Liverpool, you will have a good future. Because after you graduate from Liverpool, you can go to America, Hong Kong or Singapore to work as a lawyer.

Lancaster and Coventry are not reputable universities. Anybody can get into Lancaster and Coventry. Don't waste your parents money.

oops sorry . its not like that, here in pakistan we don't have law firms and their is no concept of a solicitor. so it all comes down to winning if you keep winning cases then you will getting them and once you have won enough then you can charge whatever you like for instace ten million per case and keep in mind we get like 3 to 4 cases per month but to answer however it all depends on when u get your first case and the system is indeed not fair. so yes you do struggle as a young lawyer. a junior lawyer can barely makes his rent but luckily he does'nt have to because well generally he is living with his parents lol. but once you make it then sky is the limitb

Can you be more specific about what course they're offering? Their website doesn't mention a 'Law foundation year'. I doubt it will make any difference which one you pick, neither are particularly prestigious or well know abroad; but they're both solid universities where you'll get a good education.

Classic 6th former's mentality. Liverpool is a weak RG university with significantly lower entry requirements than Lancaster. Lancaster is the better university here, and even if this were not the case, Liverpool would by no means guarantee a 'good future'.

Entry requirements are irrelevant, all that shows is that Lancaster is more popular, not that it's better. But it doesn't matter which is best, nobody in Pakistan will have heard of them anyway. The only names anyone in Pakistan will know are Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, UCL, the University of London and maybe Edinburgh.

I said entry standards, not requirements. Nevertheless a common line on this site. Higher entry shows that the smarter students want to study at Lancaster and they do study at Lancaster. That implies a lot of things about the strength of the academics at Lancaster, the strength of Lancaster grads who take up TCs and represent the uni as ambassadors, and the ease with which Lancaster grads take up TCs. It might not matter so much in geography or biology, but for law these things are quite important. More important than how good the IT facilities are at a particular uni.

No, you said requirements. "Liverpool is a weak RG university with significantly lower entry requirements than Lancaster"

There is no evidence that smarter people want to or do study at Lancaster. For all your know Lancaster and Liverpool may receive the same number of A*AA applicants.

Ahh, apologies! I meant to write standards. Muscle memory took over.

And the fact that the better students go to Lancaster is proof of that. I am not sure what relevance you think A*AA applications have here. More to the point, this discussion is rooted in unhelpful hypotheticals and I don't think it's useful to anyone to pursue it.

I am German and I study at an international school. Look at the profiles of lawyers on the various international law firms' websites outside of the UK. I have seen many Liverpool and Sheffield graduates. TS is from Pakistan. It would be sensible for him to choose either Sheffield, Liverpool, Manchester over Lancaster and Coventry. This is a fact. Please do not mislead him.

This is not about saving Lancaster's or Coventry's face. We are talking about TS's future. As an international student, it really does matter which uni he goes to. We do not know what the future holds for him. But I can assure you that later on in his life, if he wants to work in America, Hong Kong or Singapore, being a Lancaster or Coventry graduate will not hold him in good stead.

Just so you know, this are the starting salaries for junior lawyers in the following 3 countries.
America
USD$3876, £2771, Pakistani Rupee 405,991.41

Hong Kong HK$73,00, £6714.75, Pakistani Rupee 983,431.30http://www.aquissearch.com/news/hong...vey-2015/4941/

Question! Do British law firms located in UK offer these wages for a junior lawyer? A simple yes or no from you will suffice.

If you are a foreign lawyer in America, Hong Kong or Singapore, the international law firm will pay for your housing and petrol for your car. When you become a senior lawyer at some of the international law firms, they will also pay for your first 2 children's education in the international school. Did you not know this?

Btw, do you play football? If you go to a good university in UK and after graduation, you want to be a foreign lawyer in Hong Kong, you can join the Hong Kong lawyers' football league :h:
