why do A-Level Students Look Down on BTEC's?

Hardly, people from my BTEC course went on to be Software Engineers without going to uni.

*Exactly, with BTEC you have to do a relevant placement to the course

most of my friends who did A levels, of those who didnt go to uni are still working in the part time jobs that they had 3 years ago (except they are full time) in supermarkets, restaurants, hotels etc. getting paid like £7 ph where as most people from BTEC, again of those who didnt go to uni, are working in IT (Software Engineers, Systems Analysts, Consultancy etc. )or Engineering (Mostly Electronic or Mechanical Engineers, although I know one person who got into Aerospace) this is depending on what BTEC they did, and I know a few people who did the Business BTEC at my college who are working as Account Managers, CRMs etc. and one guy working as a Business Intelligence Analyst and getting paid loads!

Yeah, working in those places doing what? Filing? Getting paid how much? A levels are for further study so it's stupid to go work without going to uni with them. BTECs are for those that can't really handle uni so you gave them something that they can use to get a job. That's the reason BTECs were made and you can argue about it all you want but that was the initial premise.

?

He even gave the breakdown of roles (Software Engineers, System Analysts..), in what world do the above roles translate into "filing"?

Clearly, as i have said previously I am in my second year of my MSci Computer Science degree at a top 20 uni and doing well, but clearly I cant handle uni, thanks for letting me know...

Also my friends from my old BTEC class are also doing well, and go to some top universities including; Kings College London, Southampton, Manchester, Surrey, York, Cardiff and Bath, but clearly they cant handle uni either

I can agrue with that, how come emplyers put their employees through BTECs then? I have a friend who instead of going to uni went to do a Software Engineering Apprenticeship, which included doing a BTEC Level 3, he got to skip doing this and progress quicker with the job compared to the bpeople who got onto the apprenticeship with A levels who had to spend their first year of the apprenticeship doing the BTEC that y friends did while they did their A levels, he is now being sponsored to do a degree by the company as well as earning almost a graduate level salary in just 2 years.

As Engineers, Analysts, Consultants...hardly just filing, which isnt even a job role, people who would do filing would be called administrative assistants and have more to do than just 'filing', and for people who have a good grade in a BTEC Level 3 they would (in most cases) go in at a higher level than this anyway and in a more specialised role that they are trained to do like the aforementioned.

So you're saying that people with BTECS get engineering jobs just like that? Lol you're delusional and lying about these "friends". Whatever to make yourself feel better.

I also said that they were DESIGNED with that in mind. I never said all people that did BTECs are slow.

Wow you've resorted to calling me a liar, you truly are pathetic and just shows how you have lost this argument :P

And also they dont just 'get engineering jobs like that' they obviously have to do interviews, assessment centres etc. but clearly if big companies are doing these tests and taking a lot of people with BTECs that says a lot more than you're misguided opinions, same applies to universities, currently 95% accept BTECs and that has been rising each year.

Just for your information, whether you choose to believe me or not, I am 100% not lying, some companies that they work at include Capgemini, BAE Systems and CGI as well as some other smaller independent companies which i wont name on here.

And no they werent, they were designed as vocational qualifications for people to take to support their careers in a particular industry, they were never intended as an 'inferior' alternative for people to do if they didnt pursue academics and werent originally designed for entry to university, universities started accepting them as they discovered the validity and appropriateness of them

How did you get the 3 week EY placement? And the JP Morgan one?

JP morgan part of the SMF and EY part of the smart futures programme

And? Has pulling out a string of results that was entirely not my fault, at all, got your juices flowing? Love how you casually missed the fact that I have pretty decent other results and offers from top universities just to casually make yourself look better for a brief, insignificant moment.

Get back to studying for your exams.

He's not lying, just because you don't understand it, don't try to repudiate it. You can get an engineering job with a Btec. Once you start on a Level 4 or 5 course, you are on track to becoming the engineer that you took the course for. I also have friends that have taken this path.

Cute.

What University are you going to and what course are you going to take?

Of course you can, but in terms of salary, you'll be no where near the intense competitors who have received degrees from prestigious institutions such as Imperial and Oxford.

Except when those 'prestigious degree holders' are unemployed after uni.. What about then?

Yes, because Imperial and Oxford engineering undergraduates are commonly unemployed after university, yet BTEC students from run-down colleges manage to get jobs at Google, Goldman Sachs, Apple, NASA, etc. Yes that is so true (!). Please stick to your sales advisor jobs at Three before spouting out rubbish again, idiot.

I agree on some terms. I doubt a Btec student with an Engineering degree would get as much as an Oxford graduate, however I know a person who took a Btec level 5 course in Aeronautical Engineering and he is earning 45K a year. However he's been at the company for a long time which could have contributed to his rise in his salary. The average salary for a Aeronautical Engineer is £30,697. So it really depends, but I think the Oxford Graduate would have the upper hand. But don't forget, Oxford actually takes Btec grades but he decided not to go to University.

I doubt the engineering department at Oxford takes students with a distinction in BTEC over students who have achieved straight A* and A's..

Yes, c.7-11% of them are unemployed after uni every year.

Says the person who has never made any money in their life, get a grip mate. Stop trying to put people down when you've barely achieved anything yet. Carry on with this attitude into your interviews for jobs and I 100% guarantee you will get rejected.

N.B. Just wait til you get experience of the real world before spewing incessant nonsense on here.

Grades and university don't usually matter a great deal. Employers tend to look past that for the most part. Knowledge and personality characteristics are probably better indicators of 'success'.

Yes you are right, Oxford do value A levels over Btec. You can pretty much take different scientific or math subjects at A level and still get an Engineering course at Oxford. With a Btec, you have to take a specific course in order to get into that exact course. However if the person gets the grades, there is no reason not to except them unless previous results show their insignificance.

I agree, I'm not saying you are wrong. I'm just stating that you can go straight into Engineering with a Btec.
