Ever thought about sales? Scientific of course. As far as I know you basically have to have great people/networking skills to talk to people about their work and provide them with your products/solutions.

yeh looked into that a bit and actually through my work experience got to interact with them as theyd come round the lab to sell us knew equipment.. i didnt like it as it was very sales orientated not rly to do with science, and far too much travelling for me. I need to feel really strongly about what im marketing and somehow pH calib sticks just dont do it for me..
so yeh, mayb sales and marketing, but in a different sector.
cheers
Interviews are in April we should be hearing back soon!
Does anyone know when?

We're supposed to hear back from the 21st March onwards.

Do we actually learn what our shortlisting scores are even if we don't gain enough to get an interview?

They publish the shortlisting scores on Oriel July sometime if I remember correctly

I guess that is part of what they are looking for though. Given the word limits, people will choose different ways of writing which will tell them a lot about how we are suited to the role, and how concise we can be. Writing to a word limit is a skill we should have as scientists, especially if we have considered academic careers

Its not just the 250 word answers, you also had your work experience and employment history section. This is where I squeezed all my lab tech stuff in!

Literally just keeping my fingers crossed at this point, I don't think there anything else that can be done. It's a really terrifying amount of time to wait though, and the fact that I will have less than a month to organise travel/hotel etc for Birmingham if I do get an interview is stressing me out!

LOL I'm not even worried about that, shows how much hope I have. Will cross bridges as they say.
Does anyone know if you are tied to a job within the specific NHS trust you get the position at after you finish the 3 years, or whether you can go and get a job in any NHS hospital afterwards?

You're not even guaranteed a job at the end, so I think there will definitely be some flexibility as to where you work after. But I've heard many say the job prospects are good regardless.

Direct entry people, does anyone remember what time you found out about the online tests the day after your deadline?
It was the in-service deadline yesterday, and we haven't heard anything yet!

We found out on the 18th February, after submitting by the 12th. Do you guys go straight to interview if you do well on the tests? (I remember there was a difference between ours, but couldn't recall what!)

Ok thanks! Our deadline for applications was Friday 11th March and the deadline for online tests was yesterday, so maybe we won't find out for a few more days!
Yeah we have to pass NHS minimum standards for the online tests and for our application questions and then we go to interview, so I'm hoping they tell us whether we've passed the online tests first!!
Obviously it's jumping the gun a lot as I may well not (probably won't!!) get to the interview stages, but I was just wondered if there is anyone on here that is in their second (or more) year of applying? I just wondered what kind of experience people had had at the interviews and what kind of questions are asked at the different stages. Are the specialism questions REALLY specific or are they the kind of thing you could make an educated guess at?? Just thought I'd get these questions in as it'll probably get lost in the flood of successful unsuccessful messages!

p.s. applied for cardiac and genomics

I wouldn't count on getting tips about the interview. You (and everyone who is reading this forum) is competition after all. And there is always the issue of the ''unfair advantage'' etc.. From what I manged to find out from some people who got into stp is that the specialism questions will be basic but specific. e.g. for genomics you might get a question about sequencing platforms and for cardiac they could ask you e.g. about an echocardiogram, so you need to have some background knowledge.
For general science question apparently it can be anything, even to comment on a fragment of a pseudoscientific article, so you cannot really prepare for that.

Cool, thanks for the advice. Yeah completely understand the unfair advantage idea, but not trying to get one over other candidates, just wanted some very general info - so many thanks for providing.

They are pretty difficult to find, luckily the trust I'm working at currently has had a few band 5 BMS posts come up so I missed out on them in my department but I'm moving over to immunology! I have accepted the post but still waiting to see if I get an interview for STP, it would be a quicker route up the ladder!

Wow, so you're gonna be a Trainee BMS in Immunology? That really is gold dust! Immunology is hard to get into, I've tried! I've just started a Trainee post in Blood Sciences (Haematology, Biochemistry & Blood Transfusion), but am still holding out for STP in Immunology with Haem & BT as my second choice. Did you apply for the same specialisms last year as you have this year?

I applied for Immunology too! I thought about applying for Haem but I did my IBMS placement in an Immunology lab so I thought I'd have the most experience in that specialism!

I think I saw on their website that they will let us know from the week starting 21st, so I think that means that we'll find out end of next week probably.
