Finally the US admits the Islamic State are committing genocide

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-35831711
The US says the Islamic State (IS) group has committed genocide against Yazidis, Christians and Shia Muslims.US Secretary of State John Kerry said IS was "genocidal by self-proclamation, by ideology and by actions".
He also said the group was responsible for crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing in areas it controls in Syria and Iraq.

It's about time they admitted this.
One wonders why it took them so long to say the obvious. This is hardly news to anybody.

"Admitted"?

What are you trying to suggest?

It's not like the US have been okay with IS's actions up to this point, they've been widely condemning them in fact.

Genocide is a very powerful word, with a very specific meaning. Using it has the potential to completely overblow what IS are doing, making them out to be more of a problem than they actually are. Which is why nobody has been using it up until now.

It's important to keep to the facts, remember Iraq's WMDs? Seems like this time the US is being more cautious, which is definitely not a bad thing.

That for a long time (too long) they quibbled over this fact

I can understand why given the Muslim lobby in the country and the usual worries over a (non existent) 'backlash' to the muslim population.

Which is why Kerry has said '"Naming these crimes is important, but what is essential is to stop them,"
They're doing it with American weapons and vehicles. Thanks Obama!

How did they get their hands on all those armored Humvees? Almost as if they allowed them to take it on purpose.

It'll push them to do more militarily, from a Democrat position that is bad, from a Republican position that would be good. All about domestic politics really.

They got their hands on them because the Iraqi army, which had been equipped by the US with US equipment, basically collapsed in northern Iraq, leaving bases and large amounts of weaponry in ISIS' hands.

The vast majority of ISIS' weaponry is actually Russian in origin, being captured from the Syrian army, Syrian rebel groups, and some from the Iraqi army.
