I don't think many do. I think you are confusing it with the following. They think any criticism of Muslims or any cultural practises from that demographic of people is racist or in some hitting down at an oppresed group of people. Which can result in left wing people somewhat bizarrely defending oppressive conservative religion and labelling anyone who does criticise, even from a left wing position, as a racist or islamophobe. The utmost extreme of this is when people end up essentially supporting what can be considered very right wing groups like ISIS or Hamas.

But then some on the right also act as if left wing defence of Muslims from persecution is nothing but defence of Islamism or groups like Hamas or ISIS. They are two sides of the same coin.

The problem is the world is complicated. Left wing thought is often about striving for egalitarianism and breaking down social hierarchies. But what do you do when their exist multiple hierarchies that overlap and conflict? So Muslims face abuse on the streets. But Islamic culture, like all religion, is very capable of being hierarchial. It is very patriarchal for example. So you get feminists defending Muslim women being harassed for wearing viels, even though veils are the result of patriarchal religion. When I see a Muslim woman wearing a face scarf I see an oppressed woman. But then I don't think the state should be aloud to dictate what people wear and there is always the chance I am wrong. So what do I do? One the one hand I want to foster internal dissidence of women in the Muslim communities, like what has happened and is still happening in Christianity but then I also want to defend their right to wear what they like. It's complicated.

Admittedly such attacks are not as prevalent in the UK, but harassment remains a common issue. Old/middle generation are all the same. My granddad had his car window opened and said normally, " Oi look at that n*gg** there with those big bold eyes ", I tried not to laugh but was unexpected.. old Britain is old... new generation is completly different so just ignore it they'll be gone in 20 years time (old)

It's really hard to imagine all those dirty football chavs that bullied ethnic minorities in the 70's and 80's now look like innocent old people.

Yea my grandma said that it used to be very rare that you saw ablackman in the UK I dont think she ever adjusted to it. My parents are similar and even some people in their 20's.

Having said this she wouldnt blurt out unneccasary comments like in the op she didnt know the guy and he could be the nicest man on earth for all the old woman knew. I think op should have said something no reason to take that.

In a city of nearly 9,000,000 people, 76 'hate-crime' offences in a week is not frequent.
