NHS Scientist Training Programme 2016 applicants!

I'm shortlisted reserve for microbiology and have just accepted an associate scientist position somewhere else. It's highly unlikely, but it would certainly be awkward if I was offered an interview now!

Best of luck to those shortlisted this year. Who knows I may apply again in future

Hey al!, first time posting in on the student room despite lurking here for the past 3 years, does anyone have a clue what we can expect at the interview stage. All I know is that we have 4 stations of 10 minutes each.
what does undefined in med physics mean?
My advice to anyone on the reserve list would be if you have spare time then PREPARE for an interview regardless. I was shortlist reserve last year for Audiology and had a call at around 6pm the day before the interviews to invite me to interview the next day! I hadn't done any interview prep as I was preparing for my final uni exams at the same time and there were a few questions that I couldn't answer properly that a bit of prep would have been useful for. Luckily managed to get an interview directly this year.

I believe that for med phys there are different specialisms within that e.g. radiotherapy, and that 'undefined' means you don't know which specialism that location is offering yet. I'm sure people applying for med phys can offer more details

Do you have any advice on what kind of questions we could expect?

You just gave me some hope, haha...but this "last moment" game is driving me crazy, and if something similar happens to me, I'd have to literally spend a fortune on train tickets :frown:

Anyway, did they actually call you, or you got an email?

I think undefined means that they offer all the specialisms?

Congrats about the job! Is it something clinical or pure research? Going back I should have done biomedical degree at least I would still have options other than STP to get into NHS.

Btw. anyone else got an interview in microbiology? If I get the job I would like to get placement in London but I guess this one will be quite popular.. :/
Hi all!

Does anyone know when they usually give the results of the interviews? (i applied for medical physics) I guess it will be after the 25th of April since we can choose the subpreference until this date but if anyone has more details would be great to share them!
Does anyone know if we can change our location preferences after submitting them? I'm finding it really hard, what are people mainly basing their choices on?

you can definitely log back in and switch them around after you've saved them once - i think its just after the deadline that you can't switch them anymore?

i found it really hard too - i ended up ranking them purely based on distance from where i am now as my partner is in a work contract and wouldn't really be able to move too far!

Sounds like a pretty good reason!! What do you reckon you'll do if you get a non commutable placement? My partner is playing the "well we'll just cross that bridge when we come to it" card" - think she's expecting me to fail !!!! Main problem is there aren't really many near me!!!

well my top 5 choices are somewhat commutable, within an hour to hour and a half drive or so. I'm kind of just hoping i'll be lucky enough to get one of those if i manage to get through the interview!!

if i get offered something further afield i think i'll have to play the "cross that bridge when we come to it" game too! its a tough one, career vs life and all!

I picked London for many reasons, 1st, if I get the job my partner will likely be able to find something in London as well, the clinical lab is large and well equipped so there will be a lot of opportunities to learn new techniques and if for elective training I can chose any other hospital in London so no problem with commuting distance. Also I think that there is a greater chance they will have a job for me after stp in a big hospital and if not in this specific one, then surely in another one in London which means I will not need to move after three years (which is really a big pain when you have kids...)

These are some really good points, some I'd not considered to be honest. I'd sort of discounted London due to cost of living, but may actually rank it a bit higher now!
If you don't really have a preference you can always rank the few that you are fussed for, and then put the rest in the no preference column. The applicants who aren't able to move will thank you for it

Either way, you can indeed keep changing the order as much as you like until the closing date.
Also with regards to when you find out from interviews, timescales I had last year were:
- Interview 26th/27th March
- Preference deadline 2nd April
- Interview outcome 9th April

So you are looking at around 2 weeks after interview. I believe they need time to check the scores etc.

My message from Oriel said that ''Programme preferencing will close at 25/04/2016 17:00'' or is it different for other specialisms?
Anyone else on here got an interview for vascular science?
