M2 Elasticity

I was unsure what the 2 values of extension on part b actually meant?
I've attached my working for a and b.

I was stuck on c earlier but it's now solved (so you can ignore that picture)

Why TeeEm gone? :/ no more tagging him ;(

@Student403 @Zacken @anyone else who can help
I'm so braindead right now so I can't help right now sorry :sad:
The e= -0.6 is your original starting position.

And e=0.4 refers to the new position.

Note that e would not necessarily have been positive, although it is in this case.

I would do it with e being below B, i.e. assume it is a positive extension. The resulting quadratic I get has 0.6 and -0.4 as the two solutions. 0.6 being the starting position, and -0.4 being the desired position. Negative implies it's above B. And new length is original length plus extension = 1 + (-0.4) = 0.6 as desired.

Edit: As you have it, you have a positive quantity in a negative direction, which can be confusing.

Best not - I'm not going to be as active as I was, and there are others on here with more extensive mechanics experience.

Edit: But thanks for the thought. :smile:

I am studying stats and mech, on my own, though. I'm doing S1-3, M1-3.

Sorry to hear you won't be as active - I wondered why had hadn't seen your name for a while. So I would just like to thank you for all the replies you have made to my mechanics posts through the years. I eventually got as far as 1/2 way through edexcel M3 but I think I've reached my limit but I do continuue look at mechanics posts.

Enjoy whatever you will be doing instead of TSR.

I'll still be around, for now, at least.

Best leave that one unanswered.
