The Student Room Group

Whats so bad about segregation ?

So recently we have had people complaining about how bad it is some Muslim groups segregate men and women at social events, however the same people that have a problem with this accept segregation in their daily lives. Sports teams are segregated, changing rooms, toilets, some clubs such as Golf clubs are segregated and some gyms have seperate rooms for women only. Ofcourse if the Muslim social events are somehow treating the women unfairly because they are women then that is obviously wrong; so if for example at an event the women are at the back and are not able to see the speakers clearly then that is unfair, but if the seating is arranged fairly then whats the problem?

Why do we accept segregation at Eton but not at Muslim social events?

Opinions welcome.

People r pricks.
Endlessly trying to find flaws in Islam.
Have nothing better to do but complain.
They think segregation in Islam is to do with equality but it's not.

Many reasons meine buddy.
In my opinion I feel like when you segregate people it creates a lot more tension between the two sexes.
However, I think in some cases they should be segregated i.e. in toilets and etc where both genders feels more comfortable that way. Also the examples you mentioned; mostly related to sports, I'm pretty sure you're aware women are not as 'strong' as men (probably not the best way to word it) but as in physique wise.
That's my input to that but I want to also ask why must there be segregation in social events in some Muslim communities when both genders can be in the same room and just socialise normally ??

P.S. English isn't my first language so please don't be be harsh on me lol

But your comparisons aren't valid though because social events don't require similar levels of strength needed for sports nor is intimacy an issue like it is in toilets.

What is a reasonable justification for segregation in social events?

But the most countries that have segregation laws tend be those with bad gender equality.
Any reasons for that ?

correlation does not equal causation.

Eg. Standing segregated In a McDonald's queue has nothing to do with equality. It's not like either gender gets served faster or anything.

don't ask me for reasons, I'm not the country that implements them.

What does it matter that they are bieng segregated in social events if they are treated equally?

The correlation causation point wasn't really helpful. Correlations say A LOT about the underlying mechanisms behind things, you just need enough information to piece it together.

Those that care enough to segregate by sex are likely to discriminate between the two, otherwise why would they be segregated? It implies that one sex is inherently significantly different to the other, and with it a differential in standing, power, etc.

The most egalitarian countries, with the best quality of life outcomes, have by far the least segregation. On the other hand, those with the worst outcomes (generally), have the highest level of segregation.

To segregate is also a massive impingement on freedom. You are being forced to segregate.

Wasn't there a thing where non-whites were segregated in buses etc.? Was this a positive thing? Pretty sure it was a symptomatic expression of the massive problems of equality.

How is segregation in social events equal treatment? It is literally unequal treatment. I ask once again, what valid reason is there for gender segregation for social events?

How is it unequal treatment it is literally equal treatment. Explain how it is unequal?

As for a valid reason, there doesn't have to be one, these people are choosing to live their lives the way they see fit and don't have to justify it just because you don't like it. It's not harming anyone.

"It implies that one sex is inherently significantly different to the other,"

Er but males and females are significantly different to eachother, otherwise why would people bother going through sex changes?
Ask the blacks in the States how "segregation" worked out.

The whole "separate but equal" is just as ******** here as it was in the US. Once you separate people, you're almost certainly treating them differently and the segregation makes it easy to do so.

I think segregation is wrong even in toilets.
People need to understand Islam for what it really is. It has been tarnished but having read the Quran I found it to be a thing of beauty. I believe society could benefit if we followed those teachings and I am not even Muslim

I am not religious but I believe we should have gender segregated events. I read the Quran once and it explained the social benefit of segregation. We have to accept that men and women are different, we are not the same. We so deserve the same rights and segregation would not prevent this

Crazy how OP & co don't feel the need to answer this fundamental question before continuing to forward their agenda

Every single society, except the modern West and it's children societies, has practiced segregation to some degree. The reason is to stop adultery.

Considering the lack of marriage, number of divorces, single mothers and infidelity in the West, and the negative broader consequences, especially of children raised by single parents (higher crime rates, greater levels of depression etc.), it is no surprise that the Muslims want to nip this problem in the bud.

Then gtfo out of the West if it's full of infidels and lacks marriages. Simple.
