Tbh I find that those with self-esteem issues do think that..

"I'm ugly"
*stares in mirror for a while*
"Hmm ok maybe I'm not THAT bad"
*few seconds pass*
"Maybe I don't think I'm THAT bad because I'm used to my face, those that see me for the first time probably get horrified."

It might have nothing to do with self esteem. I had an acquaintance who accepted that he had an ugly mug but his self esteem was fine. Lying to yourself because your self esteem is based on your looks is worse.

There's nothing wrong in believing you're beautiful imo...
Also should have added a little note...'Personality matters more'...you're right, self-esteem shouldn't be based on looks but the sad truth is that it is for the majority of teens...what we look like is the first thing people judge us on so we think it matters the most.
