Accommodation opinions from current bath students?

Can you elaborate and please don't go into your anti-ensuite spiel, I think we've all heard it.

I haven't a clue what you have applied for, but CLEARLY it isn't a STEM subject.


Those of us who have a solid understanding of mathematics (economics to some degree), realise that it is pathetic to spend twice as much for essentially the same thing. Perhaps it has eluded you, but you can live at Eastwood, have all the facilities a normally functioning human needs (I do not exaggerate) and three times the happiness because you don't need to live off mouldy ham for the next three weeks as you have enough money left for food at the end of the week.

A few weeks back I had to explain this to someone who had applied for mathematics...... I despair.

I truly, truly, want to see people like that undine-monty plonker pay back their debts. First, she is essentially studying unemployment itself, then thinks it is sensible to waste money on unnecesseties, if I may so say.

One of the things an a-level mathematics course entails is this thing called sequences and series and analysis thereof, including subtleties like compound interest.

Now, having studied a minimum of that, people realise what I said above and I won't repeat it. tl;dr It simply isn't economical to pay twice the cost for the same thing. You cannot argue with that. Unless you study psychology or whatever and cannot handle simple mathematics - I mean so simple it'll make your head spin.

Admittedly, a balance is important at university - particularly one which specialises in STEM, like Bath. Where else are the needy, *cough* I mean nerdy, lads in the STEM faculties gonna get their ehem from? Yeah, we need sociologists at university.

They're not the same thing though. One accommodation has more than the other which is why one costs more than the other. You don't even need a GCSE to understand that. You don't even need to have finished primary to get that.

Because you obviously need a shower in your own room when you can have one for half the price opposite your room, like two feet away..?

I don't need one; I want one in my room. I don't want to share a bathroom with anyone. I just want my own. A lot of people would share my view. Some other people might want one because of a medical issue they don't want other people finding out about. They are both rational reasons to want an en-suite.

You're making a big deal out of people wanting en-suites and every time I get involved in this discussion with you about en-suites or non Eastwood accommodations, it mentally drains me. You're so biased towards Eastwood and I don't get why you can't just respect someone else's decision to not opt for an Eastwood room.

Then cry elsewhere when you're knee-deep in debt and unemployed. I won't have it.

Think what you want about my future, I don't really care because I know I'll be fine and I won't be unemployed.

I'm thinking about Osbourne House or Marl/Sols. But theres not much info on here about Osbourne house. So whats Osbourne House like? On the website it's only £122pw for an ensuite, which is much cheaper than marl/sols at £150pw also ensuite. Where is it on campus and would it be far to walk to lectures/ the bus stop etc? and whats the social life like there?

Marlborough/Solsbury is the best accommodation on your list OP, hands down. Norwood is probably one of the ugliest buildings I have ever seen, and unless you're a good 5-6 floors above the club, the noise is going to destroy your soul.

Westwood and Eastwood are OK, they're more the standard student accommodation you'd expect to find at other uni's. If you really want quality though, go Quads. That place is so good, room size aside.

I was considering Marlborough or Quads

On the one hand whilst i can see Quads is super new, modern and nice; i've heard its rather lonely due to less people and if you don't get on you're pretty screwed by ways of dorm friends? As well as the rooms being modern yet small with the en suite

Marlborough i have heard nothing but good out of but have not seen ANY of it? I stayed with a friend in Eastwood and whilst it was very "student-y" and less of my preference it was very sociable and nice. Is Marlborough very modern and new or?

Absolutely. Ask yourself: are you going to university, or is this an extended holiday where you insist on having an "En-Suite" and a fecking flatscreen?

If the former, Eastwood. If the latter, Ibiza is that way.

I have no need for a flatscreen and i'm not extremely opposed to sharing a bathroom, however preference dictates that an en suite would be nice at least; Thus leaning me towards something like Marlborough or Woodlands. I don't think you're being particularly helpful and would ask for you to keep your own opinions out and remain unbiased if you want to respond

Non-STEM plebs aren't really wanted at Bath anyway. It was founded as a STEM school, arty losers came later. And for such those losers, the Quads et al was erected. It is a smelly, unemployment building.
