HELP! I have applied for BA HONS LAW at Middlesex! Is this a qualifying LAW DEGREE?

What is the difference between a BA HONS Law Degree and a LLB Law degree I am so confused and I fear that I have chosen the wrong course and it's too late to go back on my choice.

Does the BA allow me to become a solicitor or barrister?!

Is this a qualified law degree for this practice?

Please if someone can reply quickly and well inform me of the Ba HONS at Middlesex University.

Yes you should have chosen the LLB so get them to change it. Ut does say on the front page though

Though this degree does not offer exemptions from the academic stage of training to become a solicitor or barrister, the first year content is common with our LLB course, and those who are successful in all first year modules may transfer on to year two of the LLB.

Was it easier to get on or you just didnt read the prospectus? better give them a ring or work hard and transfer.

On the UCAS choices I have chosen the LLB Law as I did put M100. But in track - I have noticed it only now because I got accepted today - the code changed to M101 (Ba).

What an incredible situation...

There is a guy on my course that studied BA Honours in Law as his undergrad degree at a different uni, and is now studying postgrad LLB alongside me.

That would make me thing that BA Honours does not suffice as an adequate qualification to enter into the legal profession with, however I am from Scotland so maybe it is different up here :smile:

BA degrees are usually coupled with another subject such as Criminology however this might not be the case. HOWEVER you CAN still become a solicitor/barrister with a BA. You would need to do a GDL after your degree. However im only saying this if there are no other options. An LLB is a Qualifying law degree which in essence means that after completion you are free to go onto an LPC or BPTC or masters, whereas a BA is a non qualifying law degree and therefore requires you to do a 1 year GDL course. However it would be ridiculous to study a BA in Law when you could do an LLB (GDL is expensive).

With regard to your second point, it is worth asking the university what has gone on, very few universities offer a "qualifying" BA and of those only Nottingham and Oxford come to mind i dont think Midlesex is one of those (however please do ask as im not sure) The only reason i can think of is (sorry if this sounds rude) but the entry requirements for the BA is lower than the LLB (just looked on UCAS) and maybe you did not meet their requirements for the LLB and instead of giving you a rejection they gave you a substitute degree (it is very common and universities do it all the time).

Again i was not trying to be spiteful just what is the usual and most common case. I like yourself also applied for Law so if you want any further help or anything feel free to ask :smile:

On the course's website, it is made clear that you can transfer onto the second year of the LLB if your first-year performance is satisfactory and get a qualifying law degree as a result. This carries with it no guarantees, so it'd be better just to email them and ask them to put you on their LLB course. They will probably do this without too much hassle.

Phone the Uni and ask why you are on the BA ccourse. It may be because there is an error and they will transfer you now or the error may lie with UCAS. It may be entirely correct, in which case they could have been oversubscribed or they offered you the BA as a chance to show your mettle and transfer to the LLB if you performed well enough.
