Nursing 2017

Can any one tell me why nursing entry requirements for 2016 are so much higher than for 2017 entry to adult nursing?

Most likely because tuition fees will be introduced from September 2017, thereby causing universities to predict a general decrease in applications. I have read in the Nursing Standard and mainstream newspapers that there have been far more applications to nursing this year, due to the rush for final bursaries and grants etc, so universities have subsequently raised their standards.

I'm hoping to apply for Adult Nursing to start in 2017, having already completed my first degree. I'm now looking for care assistant jobs, in time for my UCAS application this autumn! :smile:

Ok great Thankyou! That makes sense! I'm currently doing car assistant work, and I love it, it really gives you an idea of your fit for nursing! Good luck! I'm applying for 2017 aswell! A- it's less competitive and B- i wanted to travel! I know for some unis, it's 300 UCAS points for this year (2016) and next year it's around 120 UCAS points! Which is a dramatic difference.

The UCAS system is changing the points which is why it's lower in 2017, but the grades you need will still be the same

It is a great difference, and may in some ways reduce competition for those of us who will be applying then!

I'm currently looking into care assistant work in nearby nursing homes (the fact I'm reliant on public transport somewhat limits my distance), having just completed a 7 month internship in community work. Did you find it easy to secure a caring job? As nursing homes have very high turnovers, and are frequently understaffed. I've also managed to secure a week clinical placement at my local hospital, shadowing the nurses on a ward specialising in hepatology, so hopefully that will confirm my desire to pursue nursing too!

the entry requirements are exactly the same as before they have just changed the points system but you will still need to get the equivalent which is now 280 to 300 UCAS points.

There is a slight increase this year and possibly for 2017 it will be a little less but the general view is that the removal of the bursary etc. wont make any real difference although maybe those who thought it was a cheap way to get a degree will no longer apply,

Bolton have been running a nursing degree where students have to pay and have had no problems recruiting.

Nursing isn't attractive without the bursary. Also it's a shame they are lowering the entry requirements, they used to be more selective in picking those who really have the passion for the course. Now they just want as many people to fill in the places as possible, quantity over quality. Anyone can be a nurse these days but not everyone can acquire the knowledge and the emotional intelligence to become one.

They haven't lowered the entry requirements for 2017. The way UCAS award points has changed. Nurses will still need BBB or BBC
It is based on a new approach, using a qualification’s size and grades to calculate total Tariff points. The numbers are much lower, for example an A* gets 56 points under the new Tariff, in comparison with 140 under the current Tariff.

I see, this makes sense! Yes I found the caring job, easy to secure, I haven't had any problems! The only thing I would say is just be vigilant, there was a new girl who came to the nursing home and was fired becasue she just wasn't vigilant, she wasn't moving and haddeling residents in the correct way, and would make silly mistakes when giving out food for instance, she gave someone the wrong meal, just little things make sure your always looking out for how you can help, and stay kind. Even though I work at a dementia home when you have someone who is kind, they really do apreciate it!! Luckily the care home I am currently at is amazing and most people have been there for 20+ years! The carers are fantastic and are all genuinely lovely people, many of whom wanted to do nursing but weren't academic enough.
