Should prostitution be legalized?

I was watching an interview with an ex prostitute who went into prostitution to fund her phD and is now a scientist at Bristol uni. She was saying she never orgasmed while she did her job but at the end of the day, the pay paid her rent and helped her keep her phD going.

I'm going to be a bit rude here and say...prostitution was her only option....REALLY?! There are people that fund there Phd by working 2 jobs, finding sponsors, opening up "fund me" websites and more. This is judgemental of me, if she enjoyed it (which I doubt...) but if she did, then that's fine, good for her. But there are other ways to pay rent and fund your Phd...I'm going to be even more judgemental now by saying, poor men do it without prostituting themselves :/

It bothers me when women use education as an excuse for prostitution, because it really isn't.

Also prostitution is something that has completely been born out of patriarchy so why should it still exist if we're trying to move away from a male dominated society?

I'll PM you the interview and you can decide for yourself :h:

But from what I remember, she had looked at other jobs but they didn't cover her rent. And this was before the credit crunch or something I think so there were less jobs or something.

wait wait, surely the patriarchy would ban prostitution though if it's against women's liberties to get money from something like sex? if it was oppressive to women, surely they wouldn't get paid loads of money for it? I mean, I'd love to have sex for money, but because I'm a man, I can't, because of our society that supposedly favours me and not women...?

Would any amount of evidence and logical reasoning change your opinion?

Just because you get paid for something doesn't make it less oppressive. You could get paid to kill someone, that doesn't mean you haven't just committed an oppressive act (not my best example, but it's all I can think of right now). Also not all of them are paid "loads of money", especially when it comes too street prostitution.

If you would "love" to have sex for money, go ahead. No one is stopping you, male escorts do exist. Just not equal to the quantity of female sex workers. I don't know, blame patriarchy? your body is not a vessel that can be bought for a mans sexual needs.

Lol K. My opinion is justified, if you don't see it then I'm afraid we would just have to agree to disagree.

The what?
Don't think for a second that the porn industry is all fine and dandy. It's a very dark industry, a lot of things go on behind the scenes which are disgusting.

Firstly a lot of women are pressured into doing things they don't want to. Some actors/actresses have been forced to have sex with actors/actresses who have an std, there are so many documentaries on this. Some women are forced to do it with different men in a short space of time causing them to have fatigue, vomit, feel nauseous and yet they are still forced to do it because the directors believe 'the show must go on'.

Just google this stuff or watch one of the many documentaries on the porn industry, it's a nasty place.

On the prostitution thing tho, the main reason for brothels is to protect the women. If they're left on the street they can be and often are the victims of violence, many die. Brothels can be monitored, keep them safe and runs the place in an organised way. You just have to put them in the right communities because they can bring unsavoury characters and bad names to a certain place based on people's view of the trade. Stick the brothels in soho or something, the so called sex capital

even though you addressed that it wasn't a good example, it's not at all even remotely comparable - to kill somebody is to oppress somebody else, whereas sex doesn't oppress anybody if somebody not only consents but gets paid for it. and it's loads of money to a person like me - it's usually hundreds of pounds, isn't it? I wouldn't know too much about it

"nobody is stopping me"? do you think prostitution should be legal though? i.e. curb crawling and brothels?

This is true, I saw a documentary awhile ago where after the shooting was done the director and their crew decided to carry to "carry on" with the women. It just looked so unnatural and painful, it is a nasty place behind the scenes.

Exactly, so the argument the OP is making, that legalising something makes it perfect is just not true.

"not only consents but gets paid for it"....I didn't even say the sex was oppressive, I said the birth of prostitution was and is, the reasoning behind it is oppressive.

Yes I already said it should be legal for their protection.

Nope, nobody is stopping you...you said society favours women prostitutes and you would love to have sex for money so I just clarified for you that you can become a male escort if you wish too.

feminism in a nutshell

Stop it, you know I didn't mean it like that :colonhash:

Tbf I was getting bit annoyed XD
I start from the basis of minimal intervention in law. And I see no reason why it shouldn't be legalised and so it should.

Also I don't even know if I can call myself a feminist anymore. I won't call myself an egalitarian either, because I've always hated those people "I'm not feminism, I'm an egalitarian" :colonhash:

I believe in equality, but 3rd wave feminism has many things wrong with it, mostly it's priorities... and whilst I agree mostly with 2nd Wave, I'm not a middle class white woman. 1st wave is obviously I agree with as it was the birth of the movement...so yeah...

I'm not labelling myself anything.

I know all this, but I would argue that it therefore needs heavier regulation and more auditing. Regardless of whether it is legal or not, it is still an underground industry. But, as I also said, since porn has become more mainstream and less underground, we've seen the emergence of a number of very ethical companies which take their actors' and actresses' welfare very seriously. Openness and public acceptance is a good thing here.

Also, one does not ban something because a portion of the industry that creates it is unethical. By that logic we would ban all chocolate. It is better to try an force the industry to improve.
