Having fun is just so unprofessional. Imagine if one of her students saw it and realized that teachers are real people!!!! Think of the children!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but the number of cases coming before the regulators are very small and seem generally to involve teachers whose off-duty lifestyle is making a statement about their values rather than isolated incidents.

In the Mexican case the woman was participating in a competition; she was interviewed by the local news media and the video went viral, all before her profession was known. I think that shows the extent to which her behaviour was seen as odd.

I think the reality is that there is a standard of off-duty behaviour that is legal but unacceptable. I think we are probably drawing it in the right place. The Mexican example was close to the line, as the level of her support indicates. There are American examples where where teachers have been sacked essentially in response to the complaint of the most prudish parent, and it is important not to end up there.

It's absolutely ridiculous that she was fired and a sad sign that puritanism is still live and well in our culture.

Do you think private schools care less about this sort of stuff. I think they'd be laughing at this video at mine and would do nothing and I can't work out why because most of the parents pay so much.

Also what about politicians. A teacher would never be fired for having an affair. Is there anything in it beyond becoming an embarrassment in the press or do you think there are good grounds for treating them differently

She taught at a Mexican private school.

A harmless thing which she did in her spare time while on holiday does not in any way affect her ability to teach, and I find it disgusting that people are actually defending the school here. Being in a profession such as teaching shouldn't mean you're not allowed to have harmless fun in your own time.

I feel here it would be different. Was this Mexican school of a Catholic bent, for example.

She is also hired as a rolemodel. Stripping half naked and performing a semi pornographic dance which is then beamed around the world is not the sort of behaviour impressionable children should be tolerated to witness in their teachers any more than their parents

This sort of incident will also affect the learning of her pupils

That's the late 21st century twist... once upon a time a teacher could have let his or her hair down for 10 minutes on holiday in the expectation that they weren't going to be videoed on a smartphone and that in any case there wasn't any way to distribute the videos widely.

I don't think it's particularly important to know whether or not a teacher twerks when they're on their holidays. I suspect for example that the UK tabloids would have been on thin ice trying to think up a robust public interest for publishing a similar story, but the tech has taken it out of control. Most people I suspect have done things they wouldn't want their boss to know about - I reckon it's still early days for the career blighting power of phone cams and social media.
