How do you get experience in finance jobs?

All the finance jobs I see seem to demand at least a year or two's experience in a finance job and require experience with SAGE.

Where does one gain this experience? Is there an entry level job that would provide it?

Well for instance - payroll jobs always ask for experience in SAGE. Perhaps that isn't considered a "finance" job.

Finance assistants ask for experience in a busy office environment.

And as for finance analysts, banking, etc. I want a more relevant job whilst studying that will give me experience to move on to those sorts of jobs if that's what I decide I want to do. Internships are only a couple months long and I don't know if I'll be able to get onto one if I'm going through the Open University as I would be going into 2nd year and wouldn't have any predicted degree classification.
