Around how many graduates do they employ each year for accounting/finance/tax schemes?

I'm a undergrad in accounting and finance at uni of Middlesex. Any tips before applying and If it's a good scheme to apply for?

I hear this scheme is extremelyyyyyyyy competitive. Does the uni matter if you study accounting and finance/management

Well I just went on the facebook page and someone has asked specifically if the info screenshotted earlier is still accurate. So hopefully things will be clearer soon.

Has received a very generic response:

"All places on TSP are allocated on strict merit order basis. The higher you finish increases your chances to be offered a location that you have requested on your preference form. For further information, please contact Gwynne at [email protected] . Any updates to the preference / placement exercises will be posted on this Facebook Page. Thank You"

Haha so true, I'm almost half convinced they're going to just pull the names and locations out of a hat whilst having a good old drink and laughing at us stressing on here.
Wouldn't even surprise me.

For this scheme the intake was 200 this year, and yes it's quite competitive over 20000 people applied. The assessors are not given any information about where or what you studied, all that matters is that you have a 2:2. Only advice I can think of is to practise the online tests as the questions aren't really hard but you need to be able to answer quickly.

@Cmitten I think I read on last year's thread that the only times you can take full weeks leave is during two weeks over Xmas, two weeks over Easter and August. The rest of the time you cannot take any leave that means you will miss a tutorial.

That's not true. You just have to manage leave around your timetable which isn't that difficult.

I imagine she's fairly inundated with things, I emailed Monday and got a reply Thursday.
@taxbod For an ultra keen bean, is there any reading material you would recommend before starting the course?

No is the short answer.

Your first exam will be bookkeeping though, so if you're that desperate you could make yourself familiar with the double entry system. (I've heard double entry that many times I don't even laugh anymore)

Is there any chance of exemptions from earlier modules for chartered accountants or similar qualifications?

Yes but you'll need to speak to Tax Academy when you start. Then they'll look at what you've done and give you any necessary exemptions.

Thankyou for the info 😀
For those of us who weren't successful, when do you think we will hear about HO positions?

It's not a guarantee you'll all be offered a position. It depends on business need and what staffing resource they have.

I work with people who were offered something last summer and others who only started in January.

Ahhh okay, I see. I guess I shouldn't hold my breath then.

Oh sorry I don't want to burst your bubble.

There's a high chance you'll be offered an EO/HO job, you might even get a TSP offer. I just meant it's not guaranteed.

Recruitment is huge here at the minute so if you don't get offered anything now just keep applying, most people I work with didn't get their job first time around.

Ah that's a lot more reassuring. Thanks.
"Finally you also have to realise that the number recruited typically exceeds the initial amount advertised simply because of the demographics of the Department where the average age is about 47. However amongst the Grade 7 population the average age is higher than that"

Just a point of correction.... The average age amongst HMRC's grade 7 population is 47 with the youngest being 25. The age range is 25-73
