Chemistry when can you use 1/2 Oxygen in equation?

Title. Sometimes the equation has to be O2 e.g. NO+O2, but somtimes it is just 1/2 O2 e.g. NO2+H2O+1/2 O2 -> 2HNO3. How do we know when and does it matter if I just put O2 instead of 1/2 O2?
