Desperate for help with Classical Civilizations - City Life in Roman Italy

Hello, I need help. I'm studying for the City Life in Roman Italy module in Classical Civilizations. I've gathered data for individual buildings on websites, primarily these:

https://www.youtube.com/user/KSHSClassCiv/videos
http://www.romanbritain.freeserve.co.uk/cc6pompeii.htm (also used for Herculaneum and Ostia)
https://freshandrosyfingered.wordpress.com/
https://sites.google.com/site/ad79eruption/pompeii (also used for Herculaneum)
http://www.ostia-antica.org/

I've also found translations for literary texts here:

http://www.romanbritain.freeserve.co.uk/ccsources.htm

I also have Pompeii: A Sourcebook, by Alison E. Cooley and M. G. L. Cooley, which contains the necessary inscriptions, and Houses and Society in Pompeii and Herculaneum, by Andrew Wallace-Hadrill.

However, I'm not sure what else to do. I'm home-educated and don't have a tutor for this module. I have a tutor for my other Classical Civilizations model, but he doesn't know what to do for this one and dropped me 1.5 months ago, when I was already behind. I would really like advice on what else to learn. Links for websites and the names of books which are helpful would be greatly appreciated. I also need advice for how to write an answer for the sort of questions I would encounter in the exam. A model question and answer would be helpful.

Please help! In advance for any help, thanks!

No, it's AS-level. I didn't do GCSE level, so I have no experience with that either.

Right the importnat thing is to learn the right syllabus so that when the exams come youve spen your time learning the correct stuff you will be tested on. OCR are nice and they supply all the past papers, as well as all the mark schemes, so they have all the questions and what they are looking for in answers.

You cna also read the examiners reports. its all there.

Ahh I did classics at GCSE, loved it! As you mentioned youre doing AS, it would be vital to check the exam board first. Find out which one you are with, and check the specification online. Go through the past papers they have as well, they are invaluable! Alternatively you can look on youtube, there have been a series of programmes that I used to watch regarding these topics when I did Classics at GCSE, or see if you can find Joanna Lumleys Greek Odyssey, (we had homework every week to watch it!) I dont have any knowledge for the AS exam sorry :frown: but the books that you do have are fab. First things first, find out the exam specification and you'll be able to find past papers! Have a look om revision sites such as tes for powerpoints and resources. Good luck!

I've looked through the past papers, the examiners reports and mark schemes. I have a general idea of what I need to know. However, I am unfamiliar with how to write this type of essay. I'm studying both Latin and Greek and know how to write literature essays, but it is essays based on physical sources that are new to me.

Also, books and websites that combine a lot of the information that I need to know would be helpful. There are numerous books listed on the resource page, but are library does not carry any of them and they are expensive. I was hoping someone could narrow it down to a good few books.

Your library will be able to get you inter library loans. Id suggest looking them up on Amazon, taking down the ISBN's and doing it that way.

Sorry I liiked at the mark schemes and thought they showed you what was wanted. I did classics, but not the same modules as this and mine was more literature. You will just have to wait for some classics grads to come along. Physical sources essays is just like history I imagine. Unless i looked through the papers I cnat really say. Will leave it to someone else more familiar. Perhaps you can get someone to mark a few for you.

My library is great, but they are rather slow with inter library loans. The information about history essays is helpful, thank you. I sat the history iGCSE exam last year, the closest thing to experience with physical sources I have. Like you, literature is more my forte. And ironically, I chose Classical Civilizations to broaden my Classical knowledge. I've been trying to find a tutor, but with no luck so far.

Im not giving you an answer because i didnt look at the questions in depth. If its just they give you a bit of information and you have to interpret it, then surely they are easy and the marking schemes show you what they are looking for? For instance they give you a plan of a house etc and ask you to answer questions on it? You can have that sort of stuff for breakfast.

work from the mark guides to get an idea of the depth and direction of info you need and then youll know what associated classics or history book will give you the info you want. Its just a bit of research. they give you all the papers.

You might as well do a few inter library loans even if they are slow and forget about them, they either show up or they dont.

You have a uni near you?

Maybe you can get a tutor who will do it online?

OK, so - first thing tomorrow, call the exam board and ask for the sample paper and mark scheme. Sometimes they can take absolutely weeks to get back to you, but don't let them: be polite, but firm. I'm a private candidate for Classical Civilisations this year too, and I did that with the Odyssey paper - it's been so incredibly helpful in letting me work out how to structure my answers and how many points to use (if you're doing OCR then it's roughly 7 examples for a 10 marker, 5-6 well explained points for a 25 marker, and 8 points for a 45 marker, with 4 supporting each side of the argument + an introduction and a well-developed conclusion). I do the Roman literature module as my other one, and because I'm also privately entered for OCR GCSE ClassCiv this year, I actually picked up all my contextual knowledge (well, some of it - I do Latin at AS and did my EPQ on Roman poets so I know a fair amount anyway) from the OCR GCSE textbook, which, apart from the topic of nouveau riche and the differences between country and city life pretty much covers all the culture you need to know for AS!

I hope this was helpful in some way - let me know if you have any other questions.

Not the exam papers - the sample papers, which are very different. Sample papers are papers with mock answers that then have a mark scheme explaining why the mock answer is good or less good, and are very useful for working out the expected essay structure.

Thanks! This will be of tremendous help. I'll get right on it.
Is there anyone willing to look over my mock paper for this module?
