I also have Pompeii: A Sourcebook, by Alison E. Cooley and M. G. L. Cooley, which contains the necessary inscriptions, and Houses and Society in Pompeii and Herculaneum, by Andrew Wallace-Hadrill.

However, I'm not sure what else to do. I'm home-educated and don't have a tutor for this module. I have a tutor for my other Classical Civilizations model, but he doesn't know what to do for this one and dropped me 1.5 months ago, when I was already behind. I would really like advice on what else to learn. Links for websites and the names of books which are helpful would be greatly appreciated. I also need advice for how to write an answer for the sort of questions I would encounter in the exam. A model question and answer would be helpful.

Right the importnat thing is to learn the right syllabus so that when the exams come youve spen your time learning the correct stuff you will be tested on. OCR are nice and they supply all the past papers, as well as all the mark schemes, so they have all the questions and what they are looking for in answers.

I've looked through the past papers, the examiners reports and mark schemes. I have a general idea of what I need to know. However, I am unfamiliar with how to write this type of essay. I'm studying both Latin and Greek and know how to write literature essays, but it is essays based on physical sources that are new to me.

Also, books and websites that combine a lot of the information that I need to know would be helpful. There are numerous books listed on the resource page, but are library does not carry any of them and they are expensive. I was hoping someone could narrow it down to a good few books.

Your library will be able to get you inter library loans. Id suggest looking them up on Amazon, taking down the ISBN's and doing it that way.

Sorry I liiked at the mark schemes and thought they showed you what was wanted. I did classics, but not the same modules as this and mine was more literature. You will just have to wait for some classics grads to come along. Physical sources essays is just like history I imagine. Unless i looked through the papers I cnat really say. Will leave it to someone else more familiar. Perhaps you can get someone to mark a few for you.

My library is great, but they are rather slow with inter library loans. The information about history essays is helpful, thank you. I sat the history iGCSE exam last year, the closest thing to experience with physical sources I have. Like you, literature is more my forte. And ironically, I chose Classical Civilizations to broaden my Classical knowledge. I've been trying to find a tutor, but with no luck so far.

OK, so - first thing tomorrow, call the exam board and ask for the sample paper and mark scheme. Sometimes they can take absolutely weeks to get back to you, but don't let them: be polite, but firm. I'm a private candidate for Classical Civilisations this year too, and I did that with the Odyssey paper - it's been so incredibly helpful in letting me work out how to structure my answers and how many points to use (if you're doing OCR then it's roughly 7 examples for a 10 marker, 5-6 well explained points for a 25 marker, and 8 points for a 45 marker, with 4 supporting each side of the argument + an introduction and a well-developed conclusion). I do the Roman literature module as my other one, and because I'm also privately entered for OCR GCSE ClassCiv this year, I actually picked up all my contextual knowledge (well, some of it - I do Latin at AS and did my EPQ on Roman poets so I know a fair amount anyway) from the OCR GCSE textbook, which, apart from the topic of nouveau riche and the differences between country and city life pretty much covers all the culture you need to know for AS!

Not the exam papers - the sample papers, which are very different. Sample papers are papers with mock answers that then have a mark scheme explaining why the mock answer is good or less good, and are very useful for working out the expected essay structure.
