question for people who started younger than 18, how did you manage to get the cigarettes? do your parents know and how did they react

I just went into a shop and brought them because the age was 16 it was no big deal to buy them at 15 and there were no think 21 or think 25 policies back then.

It's a lot harder now to buy cigs under 18 now than it was my other half gets asked for ID when she buys them at the shop for me and she's 29 as they think she may be under 25

Good point, can you think of any other ideas for questions?

It depends on the aim of your study really but I'd also ask the nicotine content of the cigarettes for instance mine is only 0.5 as I smoke silk cut but most cigs are 0.9 or 1.0.

If you study is anything to do with quitting I'd also ask about what people have done to quit smoking.

Have they used their gp? Vaping? Gum? Patches? How many times if at all have you tried giving up? Why?

1) What age did you start smoking? 14
2) Why did you start? Most of my mates smoked
3) On average, how many cigarettes do you smoke a day? 15-20
4) Which brand of cigarette do you smoke a day? Benson & Hedges Silver
5) How long do you go between cigarettes? Depends, 45 mins - 1hr 1/2

Don't start smoking as it's really hard to stop when you start

Really useful to have all of the data so far, and if anyone else wants to respond to the questions or simply has any other views, opinions or experiences about smoking in general then that would be really useful as the more info I can get the better!!!!

I would add a current age to your questionnaire as the age to start smoking has changed.

It was 16 when I started and now it's 18 so I wouldn't expect smokers to start as young as people did in my day

You could ask people if they want to quit and why

Of course.

The poster only wants replies from smokers, what made you think otherwise?
