Why do diodes and semi conductor give such Current against Voltage curve?

Why does the graph of current against voltage of a diode and a semi conductor give such curve shape? Link of graph given below.

With a diode they require a certain threshold voltage before the charge can flow, so there will be no current until this threshold is met, at which point current rapidly increases (this is what I remember from AS Physics anyway )
