Moving to QUB 2016, A LOT of questions!!

I just joined here so apologies if I am not doing this right.

I am looking to move to Belfast in Sept' 2016 to study a Masters.. I have only been to Belfast once, and that was the open day (!). So I have no idea what to expect.

I will be moving from the South (Galway). Will know, no one..

Reading about accommodation, Stranmillis sounds good ? even though, holylands sounds like mighty crack..

I will be going at a postgraduate student, however I will not be going to live with postgrad' students, because (no offence) but most postgrad's that I came across (at the open day esp) will not be there to socialise much or have a mighty amount of crack..

I like to have good crack, drink and meet loads a people of the same. So with that where would be the best place to move into? Also, I will be going playing hurling for the UNI, do sports people (football or hurling) live in certain areas or is it all mixed?

Like, ya could be stuck with, well 'odd' unsocial people??

Well there are the odd ones here and there but most people are sociable and will join in with activities.

Elms is more sociable in general because of the Treehouse and activities that might be available there (there's quite often activities there) and things are close by in terms of laundry and there's a Mace on site.

But I would say it's about 15 mins walk to the SU then another 5 mins to the MBC so it depends where you will be for classes. In retrospect I should have chosen College Gardens or Guthrie house because it's so much closer so you can get up later.

Also, is elms not moslty first years?!

Ill be doing a masters. However would prob say I'm more of a third year student!

Yes Elms is mostly first years but there are a few international students and graduates as well.

Not sure about what Guthrie house and CG is like sorry. I just know that it's closer to uni but it's obviously not as big as Elms so there will be less people. And I think to collect post you have to come down to Elms anyway.

Also not too sure about the sporty people. There's a basketball court in the Treehouse though, and a BBQ stand which people are using more now that it's summer.

Where would you recommend a first year student from London to go to? Thinking Elms, but I have heard that a lot of the local students go home at a weekend and I don't want to be left all alone! Also, option wise, which of the houses is the best shout? Will I get to choose who I am with if I do go into one of the houses or will I be placed into housing with people with similar interests or?

I think it's pretty random who they place you with. If you want the social aspect I would say go with Elms. If you don't want to walk as far then go for College Gardens or Guthrie. I have a few friends in the Stranmillis accommodation too although, I didn't even look into that as university accommodation. It's also a QUB site though.

Yeah many local students do go home at the weekend and really it depends how many students are local on your floor. On my floor most people are from England so it's not empty at the weekend.

You won't get to choose who you're who but I believe you can ask to swap or move to different buildings if they have rooms free. Some people I think have moved to one of the ensuites after being originally put in the ones without the ensuites and didn't like it.

If you're concerned about that perhaps ring them up and ask.

Ahh ok, perfect! Thank you very much, I will apply for Elms primarily in that case. It is just that I had heard that some universities have you fill out a questionnaire as to what sort of person you were! Haha tbf I will probably get along with most people, assuming they actually stay at the weekends!
