It comes with the territory that is a forum on the internet where people think they can say what they like from behind a computer screen. Many times they either don't realise or just don't care that there is someone on the other side who may genuinely be affected by what they say.

It goes far deeper than people saying mean things.

It seems like this website really grips people and has a massive effect on their wellbeing in that they need to have 'breaks' from it. I've never seen anything quite like it.

Couldn't agree more.

It's so true. It's scary.

Again, it's the same with any forum where people have a deep connection to. Maybe it's because it's their main outlet for their feelings, or perhaps it's the source of most of their friends. Maybe it's where they glean most of their support from. Whatever the connection, if it's a strong enough then you'll see people end up being affected by what goes on on the site. Positively and negatively.

As you say, sometimes it's to such an extent that people have to take a break from it for the sake of their own well being.

I feel like we have very similar views about ourselves, and life in general, so that is probably the reason why we can identify with each other and our posts! :h:

I've used a lot of forums and I've never seen anything like it is on TSR.

and the age range is the most concerning thing. A lot of young people getting a bit messed up in the head because of this site.

Exactly, Cavy. Exactly.

I genuinely feel as though you've just spoken my mind + yes, just.. thank you so much for saying that.- I feel like I'm not so alone. Sigh.

The bits in bold made me laugh. (': I do think that containing stuff is probably best for everyone sometimes. But it's totally okay bc our exams will be over soon + then hopefully I'll be able to leave.- Only a couple more months, I can do this.

Ilysm. <3

Same Anon, i'm glad we can relate to each other because so often i feel out of place in society (and no this isn't all edgy for anyone reading this ) even on here i feel like people take me and you as a bit of a joke, despite the fact we both have brains (if i'm allowed to say that lol) and just because i'm not the most technologically or socially competent person that somehow translates as 'simple minded'. And i agree, some stuff is best left unsaid and would probably shock a lot of people that know us both, however sometimes i can't keep everything in online as well as inrl and i think occasionally we should be allowed to do that so long as it wasn't to the detriment of ourselves or anyone else.
Yes exactly, even though i don't think that summer will solve anything for me but at least we won't have exams to worry about :hugs:
ilysm too Anon :lovehug: and don't let anyone put you down, you are fab ok <3

I was talking to someone else about this recently. A while ago I had a different account on here and ended up talking to a lot of people and posting a lot, but after a while it kinda feels like that's the only aspect of you personality you can express through the account and it kind of becomes like a character you have to maintain. Even though no one is actually forcing you to do it.

Exactly, no-one likes it if you stop being that cute guinea pig girl for a mere split second even though idek how this all happened, i just like animals but i agree.

I'm always fascinated by how TSR impacts people so severely (for the worse..)

It is because when some people come here they come here because they are running away from something inrl in my experience and others that ik of, for me i use this for a number of reasons but mainly because no-one has to know what i look like which is a major hang-up of mine as my appearance disgusts me so if i can interact with people my own age withut having them see what i look like then i'm happy (ofc a few ppl have seen me but that is an exception) Furthermore i am essentially anonymous on here so can be more open about how i feel about stuff on here than i would inrl as anything like that is frowned upon really by those that surround me. I think it is when someone comes onto somewhere innocently just to escape all the insults, and bullying and crap they face in daily life only to discover that it is prevalent across a site meant to be a 'safe place for students', they get upset as they are now being attacked online as well as inrl for no good reason other than for being 'too nice'

Probably because of the popularity and size of TSR. With such a large community you're more likely to see both a) People who require support and b) People who will end up becoming problem users.

And of course where those two clash, you find people negatively affected.

But I think the attitude that 'oh well this is bound to happen' or 'that's just the way it is' isn't really very progressive. The site should be thinking about its user base and how to change things so this doesn't happen. I have some ideas for one.

I do agree with you MrDystopia, but I've never seen this sort of thing on any other forum tbh.

Stating that it is bound to happen is a fact. To think the site/staff both don't care, and don't actively look for ways to change or improve, is naive.

Edit: And suggestions are always welcome. There's always been a section there for any ideas anyone has for improving the site :yy:

So you're calling me naive ?

And omg it is not a fact. Do you know anything about what constitutes a fact?

I mean did you see the great guy invasion that just happened ?

The fact I've seen users bullied, sexually harassed, had death threats made at them, had people find their personal information and threaten them with it when the site is supposedly a safe place for young people is ummmm a bit of a joke.

Wellll I think maybe users should be warned about how to not be identifiable more. And the importance of anonymity on your site. Like when you sign up for example it's really important people don't use their name if they don't want to be identified at any point but they don't necessarily realise how hard it is to get a username change and when they don't know the site that well when they first join they wouldn't expect that kind of thing to cause problems. So just putting on the sign up page do not use a username that identifies you if you wish to maintain your privacy on the site would just be a good way to help people protect themselves at the point where they don't understand the dark side of this site.

Oh and the top priority being removing offensive and bullying behaviour which I've seen stick around for far too long, especially compared to how quickly ting gets removed when it's anti-regime. Say one thing about the mods and it's down in seconds.

Put the users first in my opinion.

As has always been the case. If something is up on the site and either a staff member sees it or sees the report on it, it is dealt with.

Your suggestions regarding the sign ups should go here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=1331

Take dem rose tinted glasses off for a second. Do a poll asking user base if content affecting users gets removed in the same timeframe as anything negative about mods ?

Mods not allowed to vote in poll.

See what the users think, because you can only ever see it from the perspective that suits you which I understand it's just standard cognitive bias tings ygm.

Ok tanks for the suggestion.
