A Spy Salary?

Spy salaries are advertised as being, sometimes by a large amount, less than their private sector equivalent. I was curious what others thought about this- do you think they pay less to attract people who genuinely want to be spies, or because the government can't/won't splurge for a higher wage?
I'm sure many employees get benefits, such as travel expenses and maybe a car etc, but online the salaries are around 21k-35k depending on the role! Do you think there's truth in this? For a London salary these figures seem to be quite low, and for such an important job..

Last time I checked the base salary for MI5 and 6 was 25-28k...

Intelligence Officers are civil servants and paid comparable salaries to civil servants in other government departments. The fact that the job is particularly important to national security doesn't change that. Like all civil service jobs there are some benefits that the private sector can't always offer such as job stability, variety of work and relatively good pension arrangements. I think they pay a bit more for specialists (lawyers, cyber, etc) but even there they will be subject to civil service constraints.

If James Bond was real (and assuming he didn't get dismissed for breach of the Official Secrets Act or equality policies) he would get his suits from Marks & Spencer, take the tube to work and if he could afford a car it would he something like a Golf.

lol yeah there's no way Bond would stay at the exotic hotels that he does in the films....when he went abroad he'd have to search from a pre-approved list of accommodation with a tightly controlled maximum daily spend and would end up staying 20 miles from the city he was supposed to be in and have to get a rickshaw taxi from his accommodation (which would also be subject to a tightly controlled limit).

When he got to his accommodation, he would say "the names Bond, James Bond" and the receptionist would be like "I'm sorry Sir, no mention of that name" and he'd say well I booked it online through the travel company who were outsourced by government to save the taxpayer money, the receptionist will say "ahh yes we've had problems with that firm before, apparently their website goes down a lot and the bookings don't go through, would Sir be able to provide a credit card of his own to cover the cost?"

An Intelligence Officer starting their career may get around £25,000, which increases yearly but you do not join for the money, you join to protect your country.
