No I heard shias pray to someone else (one of the imams i think) and they ask him to sort of open the doors before you ca pray directly to Allah? Correct me if I'm wrong. :s-smilie:

that's called 'ziyarat al imam' it's basically like a dua and paying your respects to the imams and theres one for the prophet and all the imams and bibi Fatima (a.s.) and for the prophet's and imam's friends and students too

A very small amount die annually, and one is instructed that they shall not fast if they feel unwell. Now if they do resist, then they won't just drop dead. And most of the Muslim population lives in the wetter regions of the world, not in the middle of the desert, which means that they are seldom likely to even get thirsty.
