HMRC Graduate Tax Specialist Programme 2016

I received an email yesterday offering me an officer role in Leeds from the reserve list. However they hope to offer me a start date at the end of the year due to floods in Shipley. I'm thrilled to be offered a role but a 7 month wait at the earliest is going to be so agonising!

Yeah, this waiting is getting a little bit too long...

Did your friend get offered the role after being unsuccessful with TSP? I hope it starts in September! I can't start until mid-August and I'd hate to lose out on a job because of it...

Yes, he was unsuccessful TSP and got offered HO so when i spoke to him recently he said that this year apparently HO and O training starts September,

Have you got an email of them? doesn't seem like anyone else have heard back from them yet.
Another week draws to a close.....and still none the wiser! :-(

I'm in a similar position as I'm already an O band Tax Specialist in HMRC, so I have no interest in an O band position.

Hi,

What is it like for an O band Tax Specialist, can you give some insight? I'm looking to accept (if offered) but I already have a half decent job at the moment, I don't want to make the wrong decision. What's the atmosphere like? Is the programme intense? Are you treated like a number in such a big organisation?

Any response would be much appreciated, even if you're not directly answering the questions above.

I got an offer on the TSP for Edinburgh a few days ago, really wasn't expecting it at this stage but still encouraging to hear things are happening!

Would anyone be able to PM me the link for the facebook group (not the official page)? Thanks

Have you asked anyone on the Facebook group about this?

Hi,

I will do this, could you (or anyone) please pm me the link to the facebook group.

Thanks!
I've had an email this morning to say my pre-employment checks are complete.
Same here, good to know I'm not the only one! Are you internal too?

I wonder whether that means we'll get issued formal offers and contracts soon, or whether they'll wait and issue them to everyone in one go.
I'm internal. I'm hoping for a formal offer soon and certainly before July!

Jeez, you guys are internal and only getting word now? Not much hope for external candidates then I guess? :-( Reserve since, like December! :-( Infuriating! If they would just put people out of their misery, either way!
Has anybody external passed their pre employment checks yet?

Can't have yet, because none of our DBS checks have been completed. DBS checks have to be 3 months or less on the start date of employment so they're not going to starts those until at least 8th June I would assume, which gives 3 months before 8th Sept. I'm assuming that internals already have a DBS with HMRC so they will know earlier.

Hey, I am currently on the O band trainee programme. Tbh it is difficult to say what the work is like. It will depend on what team you are based. The training is not a generic programme that is identical for all O band trainees. Some parts of it cover the same modules, but it depends on your tax regime. Some people have more exams than others, some complete more visits, some are doing really interesting work, others not so interesting!! You could have as little as 6 exams or upwards of 11/12 depending on the regime.
You could end up working in an evasion team, or national min wage, or VAT to name a few. Another thing to consider is you could join a VAT team, but be working in small business, when other trainees at your tutorials are looking at large business. How you each approach your day to day working would be different.
I know I am just a number in the big cogs of government, but my team is very good and I don't feel insignificant. Comms are good within my area and Directors visit and listen to issues and attempt to fix. But this isn't HMRC wide, but when you think about it, every organisation has good and bad areas to work.
There are opportunities for career progression. If you were to get TSP next year and have completed parts of the O trainee programme, you may get the odd exemption as well!! I haven't found the programme intensive. Yes, there are points when you have an exam to complete that there is a bit of pressure, but that is normal. That pressure is more self driven than management driven.

This is only my opinion. I enjoy working here, but there are others that don't enjoy the programme and don't like the organisation for various reasons. I know it doesn't really answer your questions, but I hope this helps and feel free to ask anything else.
Has anyone who has been 'offered' an O position heard anything back from HMRC?

I haven't yet, sadly. :frown:
I sent an email asking when they think they would be in a position to provide an update re O positions yesterday. I did get this reply:

Your interest and location preferences have been noted. At the moment there are no further updates. We appreciate your patience and as soon as we have an update we will be in contact.

Regards
E&C Recruitment Team

Doesn't sound like an update is imminent...
I'm external TSP. Yesterday I got an email asking for two personal referees and today one of them got contacted. I got another email today asking for my health declaration form which they said they didn't have but I sent it two months ago and forwarded it back to them today. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hello, I'm also external and got the same two emails. I also sent them the health decoration on the same day as the offer, and I thought we put reference details on the civil service jobs portal a while back too.

do you know how they contacted your personal reference? At least it looks like the checks are beginning
