For anyone doing The Development Gap, for top-down and bottom-up development, The Three Gorges dam is a great example for top-down, and the hydro-schemes set up by Practical Nation in Peru is fantastic for discussing how more electricity has helped Peru trade more, increased its education levels and drastically reduced rural-to-urban migration. Other examples of bottom-up development include the Sri-Lankan cottage industry which makes paper out of elephant dung for sale to tourists- this raises money for them with a portion of that money going to help preserve the elephant habitat.

Note: The Three Gorges dam is also good to use an example of Chinese investment in infrastructure. Although the dam has an array of environmental and social disadvantages, it is the worlds largest power station. It shows how much China is willing to invest in protecting its country by stopping flooding whilst generating clean energy that powers 10% of China's electricity. It is predicted to cost between $25 to $40 billion (Economic power).

I think for Section B, the 16 marker will have to be something which asks us to evaluate whether China and India can become the next superpower?

I think one of the twelve markers could focus on the environment whilst another on political/economic and demographic matters?

When I looked at it I identified that China has a higher level exports of mostly quaternary level goods. Whereas, India is still exporting Primary and Secondary goods. A sign of a less developed economy and less FDI.

The questions are usually asked in order other the pre-release materials. So most of the material I will use will probably be within the first three pages. :smile:

India is the worlds most democratic country whereas China is a socialist (government controlled) state. I think the argument is that does a country need to be a democracy to be a superpower? I don't think so as China has succeeded so far.

If you have to talk about whether China can become a superpower, as a socialist state, could you mention the modernisation theory and say that it mentions that a country can not modernise unless it is a democracy? Is this relevant?

Anyone get any information about conflict over energy in countries NOT between them. So far I only have NIMBY-ism in the UK and the aversion to new oil technologies such as oil-sands and oil-shale in North America.

Does anyone have any model answers or model exam question structures for each type for question in Unit 3? As in the 10, 15, 12 and 14 mark questions? I'm self-taught and haven't been able to find any resources online for this.
